A narrator who can’t effectively read aloud!
Revisado: 01-21-25
While I love Agatha Christie stories, the narration by Mark Bowen is appalling. He appears unable to add any correct inflection and even stresses incorrect words in sentences, thereby destroying the elements of sentence construction so carefully developed by the author. This is the worst narration I’ve experienced!

When their ship goes down and she is lost at sea, Derek is reminded of an Old Tale, a legend in his lands. When a woman dies at sea, she might not be lost forever. He, and Lydia's handmaiden, Alyana, find a sea witch and learn that this legend might be true. But what will it cost to see Lydia again?

I absolutely loved the twists at the end, and there were a bunch!
Revisado: 01-04-25
This was a great fantasy story. The author has created a wonderfully updated mythology around traditional mermaids, sirens and magic. The hero’s journey to find his love could be compared to a number of the usual fairy tales, but the author’s imagination built on the basics to make it so much more interesting. The performance by the narrator only enhances the story.

A Haunted House with a Scottish Twist
Revisado: 11-23-24
I love a good haunted house story, and Misery Place doesn’t disappoint. The plot quickly drew me in, as what appears to be an idyllic situation turns into a nightmare. The author does a fantastic job of slowly building the tension and creating a deepening sense of dread. I highly recommend listening to the audio version of this book, as the narrator adds additional depth with some great sound effects.

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Inconsistent character voices
Revisado: 08-01-18
Listening from one book to another, it’s clear Roy Dotrice made no effort to keep each character’s accent consistent from one book to the other. Danny goes from a neutral accent to a West Country accent to welsh. The Lanisiters are a family with a mix of welsh and English accents between siblings - these too vary from book to book.

Historia
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Big Joe Hill Fan
Revisado: 12-29-14
What did you love best about NOS4A2?
I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't entirely predictable. There were a number of plot twists that I found were unexpected but added to the story.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters were not perfect. Too many times, stories like this are written with characters that lack the normal flaws of human nature. In this case, the characters suffer from the typical happenings and consequences of life, and their responses to what happens in the story reflect that.
Have you listened to any of Kate Mulgrew’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of her other performances.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Telling it here would give it away for another potential listener, and that just wouldn't be fair. But yes, there was.
Any additional comments?
As I stated in my headline, I am a big Joe Hill fan, so I was predisposed to liking this book. However, the reason I am a fan is because he always manages to create a story that captures me almost immediately and refuses to let go until the end. In this case, I was surprised by a number of plot twists that kept the story going, even after I thought it was over. I would definitely recommend this book, not because I am a big fan, but because I found the main characters to be very believable and the plot an entertaining listen.
