Historia
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

What a triumph
Revisado: 04-10-25
I wanted to say what a tragedy, in the sense that since having left grad school I haven’t read anything that brings about the same state of catharsis, of tears and laughter, of horror and hope, as what Natalie has crafted here. And to hear her read it is like the Greek theatre coming to life after thousands of years of waiting. Calliope truly sung through her and I am in awe of how resonant the sound of the goddess is in this book.

Historia
Since the Victorian period, it has been understood that the story of Noah, iconic in the Book of Genesis, and a central motif in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, derives from a much older story that existed centuries before in ancient Babylon. But the relationship between the Babylonian and biblical traditions was shrouded in mystery. Then, in 2009, Irving Finkel, a curator at the British Museum and a world authority on ancient Mesopotamia, found himself playing detective.

Revisado: 04-03-25
I have been watching Irving Finkel for years on YouTube with the British museum and finally found all his books on audible, and I’m so grateful he’s the one reading! His tone in conveying the work and his understanding of the subject are unmatched. It feels like he’s the headmaster we all wished had been at our school.

Terrible compared to the rest of the series
Revisado: 07-04-24
What a poor finish. Not only is there an annoying pronoun issue that makes listening confusing and annoying (please don’t force woke politics on kids), there’s also a complete lack of through line with the main characters in the way the previous two prophecies quintets had. I could barely get through it but wanted to have some sort of resolution to the whole series. Such a shame that it didn’t follow through with Sundew, Blue and several of the other characters.

In ancient times, the study of the heavens and the study of the psyche comprised a single science - astrology - leading C. G. Jung to describe it as "the first form of psychology". In Making the Gods Work for You, you will learn how archetypal forces - symbolized as planets or gods - can help you create change in your life and in the world.

There are so many ways to make astrology personable and practical but this is by far one of the best approaches I’ve heard (speaking as a professional astrologer!). Love the live music and vivid humor, and deep magick present in the presentation!

In Feminism Against Progress, Mary Harrington argues that the industrial-era faith in progress is turning against all but a tiny elite of women. Women's liberation was less the result of human moral progress than an effect of the material consequences of the Industrial Revolution.

Absolutely a must read for all women, men and those who don’t want a cyborg future
Revisado: 11-28-23
Mary Harrington does a fantastic job of addressing the historical movements of feminism for those who may be unfamiliar, as well as offering a very honest view of what “feminism” has become today, while also providing a true path through the muck of liberal group-think towards a more cohesive, embodied existence.

Historia
In England’s silent-film industry, Randolph Fflytte is king. Mary Russell is dispatched to investigate the criminal activities that surround Fflytte’s movie studio, but nothing seems amiss until the company starts rehearsals in Lisbon. There the 13 blonde-haired, blue-eyed actresses whom Mary is bemusedly chaperoning meet the swarm of real buccaneers Fflytte has recruited to provide authenticity. As movie make-believe becomes true terror, Russell and Holmes themselves may experience a final fade-out.

A relief after God of the Hive
Revisado: 09-02-23
I fully disagree with some of the reviews that decry this book as not worthy of the Holmes & Russell series—it has levity, frivolity and ridiculous drugs ex machinas worthy of any 1920s film, and appropriately so! The two precious books were heavy and sad enough to warrant some melodrama. While Lisbon as a city may not be fully fleshed out, the ship life and small amount of time in Morocco do feel authentically rich and colorful in much the same way that O Jerusalem did. It was not as much of a plot twist or hidden scheme as previous books, but it was satisfying to find the Gilbert and Sullivan opera playing out in what seemed like real time with Russell’s experience. While not as deep or complex, it was refreshing and light and therefore enjoyable.

We don’t talk about Bruno
Revisado: 08-01-23
For anyone who has kids that love Encanto, this weirdly coincides with the song, as Brian points out that the Catholic Church deliberately tried to erase Giordano Bruno from history, and my kiddos overheard! With shocked looks they came up to me while I was listening and asked “so Bruno was real?” And I said yep, and they didn’t want to talk about him.
Absolutely loved this beautifully researched and well read journey through the pagan continuity hypothesis and that someone is *finally* talking about Bruno 😉

Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

I love that the question is left up to the listener, with pros and cons and illustrations of how caffeine both helps and hinders, while still being an addictive and mind-altering substance that really ought to be considered more carefully before consuming.

Historia
In a strange room in Morocco, Mary Russell is trying to solve a pressing mystery: Who am I? She has awakened with shadows in her mind, blood on her hands, and soldiers pounding on the door. Out in the hivelike streets, she discovers herself strangely adept in the skills of the underworld, escaping through alleys and rooftops, picking pockets and locks. She is clothed like a man, and armed only with her wits and a scrap of paper containing a mysterious Arabic phrase. Overhead, warplanes pass ominously north.

Revisado: 08-19-21
I love that the author took the time to fill in the gaps of what happened to Russell and Holmes while they escaped their nemesis in England for a time. It deepens their relationship and gives light to the maturity which Mary attains after spending time in the land of her ancestors.
