I thought that I would get used to the lisp.
Revisado: 08-06-23
I'm not saying this to be rude but 29 hours is a long time to listen to someone with a minor lisp.
if it were the author reading the book then I would give them a pass but as a professional narrator I'm just kind of surprised.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

One of my top three books on Mormon history
Revisado: 06-10-22
I own hundreds on Mormonism and quite a few dozen on religion and God.
One of the reasons I like the book so much is because it clearly demonstrates how the 1890 manifesto was not followed by the leaders of the church and how this deception in pretending to have stopped living polygamy fueled the underground movement and the fundamentalist polygamist groups that sprang out of Mormonism.

Learned a ton about someone that I thought I knew.
Revisado: 12-07-21
I was a cougar club season ticket holder for all of Steve's games at BYU. I watched every game that I could when the 49ers were on TV.
The book was peppered with familiar names to me.
His vulnerability in expressing his self-doubt was inspiring and unexpected.
As a lifelong Mormon, I thought at times the book was a little heavy on the references to religion which was the only downside to the entire book.

Historia
For centuries in Europe, innocent men and women were murdered for the imaginary crime of witchcraft. This was a mass delusion and moral panic, driven by pious superstition and a deadly commitment to religious conformity. In Witch: A Tale of Terror, best-selling author Sam Harris introduces and reads from Charles Mackay's beloved book, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds.

Revisado: 06-24-19
this makes an excellent case of why it is so important to have separation of church and state so that the superstitions of one religious sect or another cannot use the power of local state or national government to turn around and torture and kill innocent people without proper checks and balances and oversight

Historia
Book store nation, in the history of mankind there has never been a greater country than America. You could say we're the number one nation at being the best at greatness. But as perfect as America is in every single way, America is broken! And we can't exchange it because we're 236 years past the 30-day return window. Look around - we don't make anything anymore, we've mortgaged our future to China, and the Apologist-in-Chief goes on world tours just to bow before foreign leaders.

it is hard to compare an audiobook - his TV show because he was so animated in this facial expressions and you don't quite get that in an audiobook

Historia
Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they screw up? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Backed by years of research and delivered in lively, energetic prose, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-deception.

I learned about myself & Mormon church mistakes.
Revisado: 03-28-15
I learned about myself justification in my relationships with others and I saw many samples in my Mormon church history where we play the victim and ignore contrary evidence that we were also, as Mormons, at fault. The leaders of the church in particular, made mistakes and then made excuses for bad behavior for hundreds of years.
This book made it clear why it was so easy for good people to justify really bad behavior. Like Joseph Smith taking provera wives of women who were already married to other man even married to non Mormons in the example of my great great great aunt Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner Smith Young.
