I had been wondering why Herron keeps revisiting the deep backgrounds of his Slough House characters with these novellas. While not all of them have seemed worthwhile, this one really delivers. I wasn't ready for the moment when the penny dropped, but when it did the payoff was powerful. The ending also was quite poignant, revealing new facets of familiar characters. Top notch stuff from one of the best spy novelists on the planet.

A big improvement over Damascus Station, McCloskey spins a modern classic of the genre. As with many great spy novels, there's a moment here where the game gets flipped and the prior action needs to be read in reverse, which I love. Tight and suspenseful. Well done over all.

As the mystery genre goes, this falls on the more outlandish end of the scale. The novel is meta, as the narrator deconstructs the genre into rules, and then attempts to bend but not break each one. Mileage will vary by reader, but the result is entertaining. I wish I understood what was wrong with the page numbers. It didn't translate to audio.

An interesting tale and mystery, but the author doesn't really land the ending. With mysteries, though, a bad ending can ruin the experience. Hazard of the genre, I'm afraid. There's an interesting idea here, though, about how much of one's life a person can miss the first time through

After this, I can understand why Mick stopped the series. He can do better.

Don't let the name-callers deter you! This is another solid installment in a top-notch series. The coarse portrayal of social media, unfortunately, is spot on, as some of these comments attest. While anonymity makes for corrosive online conversion, it's a pretty great device for intrigue in a who- done-it. I couldn't stop listening!

This may be one of the worst books I've ever read. The main character is so dense, and so annoying. A reader of average intelligence will see the twist coming from early in the book. And the plot... it just doesn't hold up. You have to believe that a character, upon learning that a family member has been murdered, reacts by ... enrolling in a creative writing course so he can write a novel based on the murder. It would be funny if it weren't so forced. I'm embarrassed I burned a credit on this. Fool me once, Jean, shame on you. There won't be a second.

I like Ruth Ware, but not all of her plots hold up. Similar to her first novel, "In the Dark Dark Woods", this one hangs on at least one improbable plot point. Also, at times, the progress of the story depends on the protagonist being a bit slow on the up-take and to lack insight as to when she is relying on unjustified assumptions. That said, the novel holds its intrigue and has some plot twists that are genuinely hard to see coming. It's still worthy of the description as "Updated Agatha," which is Ware's signature.
