For fans of audiobooks I want to say that Khristine Hvam did a wonderful job narrating Junkyard Cats. She was the perfect voice for Shining and fingers crossed there will be a second audiobook with her as narrator. The story itself was addictive! I love Ms. Hunter’s work and was very excited to see what she had to offer in the science fiction genre and I was not disappointed. A huge focus of this story was Shining protecting what was hers from multiple aggressors who wanted what was hidden. Then there were the cats, heck yes, they were very cool! They were more than I expected and they were fascinating, hilarious at times, and maybe even a little scary. Also, if you love a post-apocalyptic setting with nanotech, robotics, bio-engineered insects, ridiculously advanced weaponry, and a touch of biker culture, then this story will appeal to you as well.

Guns were definitely blazing in this story but under all that gunfire there were subtle themes being introduced as well. As Shining brought out all the stops to keep what was hers safe, I learned a lot about her, her life to this point, and her motivations for the distance she kept from others. She was a very honorable character and there was a point in the story where you see a clear juxtaposition between who she is and who she could have been if she had made different choices, it was very interesting. Overall, I loved that Junkyard Cats delivered an action-packed fast-paced story that captivated my imagination but also had subtle themes woven throughout that made it a compelling story that I did not want to end. Definitely sign me up for the sequel, I want more of Shining Smith and her curious cats!

A Killer’s Mind was quite the enthralling story. It took me a little to really sink my teeth into it but once I was in the groove, I was all in. I liked how all the players were introduced, included the antagonist of the story. The story is told from multiple viewpoints and I felt that I really understood the characters motivations and what the driving forces behind choices being made were, ha ha ha, except for the killer. That was quite the mystery but I loved learning bit by bit what was taking place with that character, creepy!

One thing I didn’t love about this story was the past/present transitions that took place with Zoe’s character. The transitions were well done, it wasn’t that, I just wanted to stay in the present more. I was having such a good time in the present that I was tempted to skip those chapters that delved into the past. Learning about Zoe’s past was important, though, because it is going to be what drives the series but I could have done without how long it took to explain the event that triggered her lifetime obsession with serial killers and the like. I just wanted to stay on the hunt, so to speak 😂.

In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Tatum Gray’s character but he surprised me. He was a bit of a cowboy and Zoe and him definitely rubbed each other the wrong way at first but he proved himself to be committed to justice and willing to step out onto a ledge, if needed. In case you are wondering, there was no insta-lust between Zoe and Tatum, although there was an awareness between them. By the end of A Killer’s Mind, I felt that Zoe and Tatum had the beginnings of a great partnership and I am excited to see where that leads. Also, the ending was quite the cliffhanger. Not going to lie, I wanted to buy book two right away and binge read but I couldn’t, other commitments and all that. Overall A Killer’s Mind was a great read and one that I highly recommend!

There’s a Murder Afoot is the fifth installment of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series and what an enjoyable story it was. Gemma Doyle manages her Great Uncle Arthur’s Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium that’s located in West London in Cape Cod. Although the shop belongs to her Great Uncle, he leaves running the business and everything that encompasses to Gemma. When he was notified that he was being given an award for spreading the love of Sherlock Holmes, the last thing he wanted to do was travel to London to accept the award and he left that honor up to Gemma. For Gemma, it was an opportunity to visit both London and her family, so Arthur didn’t have to twist her arm too hard to go. Since she agreed to attend the Sherlock Holmes in the Modern World convention in her uncle’s stead, Gemma also committed to being a presenter as well.

What started out as a simple trip to collect an award turned into quite the affair as several others, after learning of Gemma’s plans, decided that they too wanted to come. Once Gemma and company reached London the mystery started almost immediately with the introduction of a character who had a shady history in Gemma’s family, a man who was utterly unknown to Gemma – her uncle, Randolph Manning. What a shock to learn that she had an uncle and that he was not one of the “good guys”. It was clear from the start that Gemma’s father had hard feelings towards Randy but the man just kept popping up everywhere. This led to increased feelings of hostility and when Randy was found dead it was a no brainer on who the police were going to look to for the murder. Gemma, her sister, Pippa, and the gang were determined to find the true killer before the wrong man was booked for the crime.

What I liked most about reading There’s a Murder Afoot was that it took all of my favorite characters from the Cape Cod setting and brought them to London. I liked the idea of them being on vacation and attending a Sherlock Holmes convention and they were most entertaining with their impressions of what was taking place around them. It was great that Ryan, Gemma’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, made the trip as well. I am hoping things stay solid between them because I like where their relationship is going. In addition, I adored getting to know Gemma’s family, especially Pippa, she was all sorts of mysterious and I loved how she was always able to make things happen. She felt like a James Bond type of character and I was intensely curious about what she was truly up to all the time. What really took the cake in this book were the shenanigans that Uncle Arthur was getting into while Gemma was away, talk about hilarious! There was never a dull moment in There’s a Murder Afoot and with all the indirect references to the Sherlock Holmes canon this story is sure to be a treat for all Sherlockians who enjoy listening to cozy mysteries!

I had such fun reading Sweep of the Blade. I loved the “dance” between Maud and Arland. I liked how different Arland was in this story compared to how he had behaved throughout this series. It was clear that he had a vested interest in Maud and that he truly cared for her. I think Arland was unrealistic about what Maud would endure when she paid a visit to House Krahr but I liked him as a romantic lead. There was nothing too swoony in this story but at the same time the romance was there.

Maud had been married to a vampire before and no matter how hard she had tried to be a contributing member of that house, when it really mattered, they threw not only her but their own blood grandchild, to the wolves, so to speak, and that left Maud with many feelings of distrust in regards to the vampire houses. The only reason she even considered a marriage with Arland was because he had proven himself worthy and her daughter was half vampire and would do better with vampire children rather than human ones. I really felt for Maud because she was very torn in this story.

The House of Krahr was not very welcoming to Maud (as expected) but after some time they did come to respect her for her fighting skills as well as her diplomatic sense. I loved the fighting scenes, especially the ones with Maud. She was a heck of a fighter but I also felt that much of her strength came from the fact that she would not allow death to separate her from her daughter. I just loved her mama bear instincts! Overall, Sweep of the Blade was a great story and I look forward to more in this series.

I did like reading Down and Dirty but it was really missing the criminal suspense element. There was some parts where J.J. was able to shine but I wish there had been more. There was a lot about her and Jack's upcoming nuptials and then the end....well sheesh.....that wrapped up very quickly and was not very satisfying.

What a lovely historical mystery! From the start Cyrus Barker was laid low and it was up to Thomas Llewelyn to take the reins of the investigation. That was a nice switch from the norm. Also, Cyrus' brother joined in on the hunt for who was responsible for the attack on the office. Unfortunately, brother or not, no one trusted Caleb. With plenty of twists and turns to keep my eyes riveted on the pages, Blood is Blood was an exciting read!

There was so much to love in Shadow's Bane! This is one of my favorite urban fantasy series because it is just packed with action, fantasy, a little romance, and a whole lot of mystery! Dory's life has had many upheavals lately but none that are so jarring as what she experienced in this book. I loved that more of her past was brought to light. A fabulous read!

I picked up this book because the idea of the main character running their own crime scene cleaning service was interesting. There was a little crime scene cleaning in this story but it was mostly focused on the crime itself. I did appreciate that the main character was open about her belief in science and that she wanted others to prove their faith in a way that she could understand. I didn't particularly care for the main character but I can see myself continuing this series. The narrator was good but I could hear her turning the pages of script.

I own both the hardcover and the audio version of this book. I switched between both and felt that the narration was nicely done.

I will admit that I had put off reading Tower of Dawn for seven months because honestly the story was about Chaol Westfall. After book two in the Throne of Glass series he has basically been dead to me and not because of how things when with Aelin. His character was very black and white and he couldn’t get beyond what he “thought” was “best” to embrace what he wanted and it led to moments of great cowardice in my opinion.

Tower of Dawn did not resurrect any of the book two’s feelings for me either. In fact, I could have done without the first four hundred pages or so of Chaol because really not that much happened with his character except for physical therapy for Chaol and political drama. Now do not get me wrong, I absolutely appreciated the disability representation and it was brilliantly done. I truly liked the approach to Chaol’s healing and that it seemed very realistic even with the fantasy element. I just didn’t like his character and it made the story just drag for me, like tortuously drag.

It was just very hard for me to stay engaged with this story at that point because Chaol was still messed up emotionally and mentally. Although, I did love Nesryn and Yrene’s characters immensely. They were my bright spots of sunshine while reading. I had felt bad for how things went for Nesryn but I really think it worked out way better than she could have ever imagined and that her ending was a much better fit for her. I loved Yrene and she deserved every little bit of happiness that she received despite her choice in men.

Thank God that Tower of Dawn picked up for me after about the four-hundred-page mark and wow did the momentum keep going. There were battles, great reveals, and some ah-ha moments as well. I loved the story after that point and would recommend that it be read prior to book seven in the Throne of Glass series. Now as far as Chaol’s character goes, I still don’t care much for him but I think he is in a good place and I was glad for how things ended for him. I am also very, very excited to see how things play out in book seven, Kingdom of Ash!
