primarily about grief
Revisado: 08-21-22
The tags on this book are wrong. It's about Elizabeth's battle to reach the other side of grief, through the pain and anger surrounding her teenage son's accidental death. I found it raw, real, and moving. Is it a bunch of positivity? No. Neither is the loss of a child or loved one. It very helpful in my own journey.

Beautifully written and what a narrator!
Revisado: 09-17-17
I was surprised to learn that Zora Neale Hurston's books were out of print for some time. This is beautifully written, yet, not a stuffy literature book. I had to get the text version because I wanted to revisit a few of the passages, stunning. One of the main "characters" is the town and it's amazing how the author vividly captures the different types of people one encounters in a close knit community. The reader, Ruby Dee was a national treasure, what talent! After listening to her read this book, I've gone back to find some of her movies.

Historia
In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

A break from the hot summer
Revisado: 09-17-17
Great book. I didn't realize the author had been the reader until after the fact- I never buy books narrated by the author unless they're autobiographical, authors are typically bad actors. Author Harry Farthing did an excellent job on the performance. Listened to this in Texas in August, it was a nice way to keep cool. The story was an engaging, action-packed thriller, but at the same time did not remind you of someone trying to write a movie script. I would definitely listen to Harry Farthing read one of his books again!

Historia
A major new series from the makers of A History Of The World In 100 Objects, exploring the fascinating and complex history of Germany from the origins of the Holy Roman Empire right up to the present day. Written and presented by Neil MacGregor, it is produced by BBC Radio 4, in partnership with the British Museum. Whilst Germany’s past is too often seen through the prism of the two World Wars, this series investigates a wider 600-year-old history of the nation through its objects.

Listened to prep for Germany trip
Revisado: 03-24-16
Listened to this because I needed to know something besides WWII about German History before going to Germany (which, I might point out, material along those lines is scare on Audible). Loved this series, never boring, I learned a ton. The only downside? There needs to be a supporting PDF with spelling and pics of the items he talks about. However, I Googled many of these by guessing at the spelling and also discovered there is a YouTube video (also available on the British Museum website) that spends an hour on much of these items, which were on display at the time the BBC radio series was made. DEFINITELY worth a listen!

Revisado: 11-28-15
I usually use Rick Steves tours. but he didn't have Spain on audio and I didn't feel like reading the book while walking, so got these for Madrid and Barcelona (we had also used them in Paris). I recommend these and would buy more tours by Simon Brooke. Don't forget to print the PDF, or download it to your phone. We didn't use it once the tour started, but it helped to identify the starting point.

Best in Class
Revisado: 10-14-13
So far, I've listened to Sol Stein (Stein on Writing),Thomas B. Sawyer (Fiction Writing Demystified) and this one. David Morrell is my favorite, although Stein covers more craft/style in my opinion. Morrell touches on a bit of everything with practicality, humor and humility. He's easy to relate to. Some of it is far beyond my current skill set or needs (things to watch out for in contracts, etc.), but it's good for future. This book never had a dull moment, and I downloaded the Kindle version as well, to make notes. Narrator was fantastic. As someone else said, it was easy to forget it wasn't being narrated by the author, so great was the narrator's enthusiasm.

I would consider this something of a sci-fi mystery. Kept me guessing, enjoyed it very much, despite the fact I'm not into sci-fi. Unique story line, I look forward to other books by Blake Crouch.

Extremely Depressing
Revisado: 08-04-13
Well written and well acted. However, several times while listening to this book, I wished I'd never started it. There were some bizarre detours that I felt were a waste of time and left unresolved. I found some of it extremely depressing. I guess I should have anticipated that, considering the content, but I expected a little more of a hopeful ending...not good listening if you need an escape from daily life...
