Historia
Iraya, her revenge taken and magic unfettered, turns her sights on a bigger goal: freeing Aiyca for the Obeah. But first she must shed the guise of the rogue warrior and become the Lost Empress her people need. Jazmyne’s mother has been overthrown, but her people aren’t ready to call her doyenne. She’s no stranger to a fight, though, and she’s prepared to go to extreme lengths—and court ruthless danger—to secure her title.

Kind of a Letdown
Revisado: 08-15-23
I was really hoping for more substance in the relationship between Iraya and Jazmyne. If a book is told from the perspective of two main characters, I want TWO main characters. Telling the story from two perspectives set me up for disappointment.
The character “development” felt forced. There was no back and forth, no balance. Jazmyne was like a resentful little sister desperate for approval and Iraya was disdainful and dismissive. That lopsided dynamic never changed on a meaningful level for me.
I would have enjoyed this story so much more if we could have just experienced the story from Iraya’s perspective from the beginning, because she was the main character all along. The writing was great, the world building and the concept of the plot were absolutely awesome and I really wish that had been the main focus, because instead I just spent the whole book waiting for authentic character development and a more meaningful relationship between Jazmyne and Iraya that just never really came. I’m walking away from this series unsatisfied.

This is just a D&D Tutorial.
Revisado: 07-05-23
This book is just a D&D campaign written down. If you don’t play or like D&D, the magic system will be borderline incomprehensible and the jokes won’t have context.
If you’re just starting to learn how to play then this will be useful for you, and it’ll probably be extremely entertaining if you’re the kind of DM who tracks how much your players’ gear weighs and changes their speed depending on it. I fall into the first category so this helped me learn a few things. But I hate the math part of D&D. Tracking my levels and skills and abilities and how many arrows I have left is my least favorite part. Plot first, math never. This book felt like endless math.
Reading the characters’ stats probably wouldn’t be a problem because you could skim it and just look at the changes. Listening to the stats be read for a good 60 seconds straight is agony for my ADHD. Tragically, I need to know what happens next and I will absolutely be getting the rest of the trilogy.

I liked it!
Revisado: 06-24-23
This book is guilty of what is quickly becoming one of my biggest pet peeves- American characters who speak like English people. No Seattleite is ever going to call them “gum boots”.
That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book! Perfectly delightful characters and story, and precisely the right ratio of whimsy to sinister.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Absolutely Flawless
Revisado: 06-20-23
It’s been a month since I finished this book, and I’m still craving it. I liked living in El’s head and in Naomi Novik’s world.
It’s clear the author knew exactly where she was going from the beginning. This was a slow burn plot that fell into place with satisfying precision while somehow managing to avoid being predictable and keeping me on the edge of my seat.
I recommend saving this series for a time when you can give it the attention it deserves. Can you savor it? Absolutely not, this series demands to be binged, but you can (and should) relish it while it lasts!

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

YUP, STILL GOOD

Sophomore slump, who?
This more than held up to the first book. The story progression felt natural and perfect, the character development was *chef’s kiss* and the third book was set up with pinpoint precision.

Historia
I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Revisado: 06-20-23
This book is fantastic. An awesome story flawlessly executed with excellent world building and a narrator well above average. I’m grateful I didn’t start this before the series was finished because I have no idea how I’d stay sane waiting for the next book.

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Captain of the famed pirate ship, the Wicked Fate, Maria is every bit as treacherous and bloodthirsty as they say. Worst Book I’ve Ever Loved
Revisado: 03-03-23
The prose drove me up the wall- all body parts were described as “those [adjective] [noun] of hers” and I’m not exaggerating when I say that phrasing happened hundreds of times. Still, I liked the world building and the story telling and somehow it all worked.
The narrator definitely pronounced a couple words wrong, “Fermiliar” stands out in my mind, but the voices and the accents were great and I enjoyed the performance.
The whole thing was begging for a good edit, and yet, I loved this book. The story was fun, the characters were great, the sex scenes were very respectful and responsible while still being hot. Overall, a win, and I enjoyed listening to this and I’m looking forward to the sequel!

First half is slow, last bits are wild
Revisado: 12-08-22
Kind of like the first one, the first 85% of this was just building tension and setting things up so the last couple chapters could explode. Great second book! Brush up on your anatomy and physiology though, it’s tough to follow if you haven’t studied the scientific names for body parts. That D in A&P is really biting me in the gluteus now…

Wrapped up quite nicely

I’m really emotional about the ending, and I’m quite satisfied too. This wrapped up all the loose ends with a perfect little bow. I’m sad it’s over but I’m happy that it happened.
