Incredible voice acting
Revisado: 01-08-25
I particularly liked this part of the Tiffany Aching series, but I mostly write this review to sing the praises of the excellent voice actor who voices most of the characters as well as the narrator. Outstanding performance.

Fun ride, if improbable ending

I enjoyed this listen. Excellent narrator. Good story. I’m no genius, but I felt like the pieces of the puzzle didn’t quite match up, but it was fun nonetheless.

Part history, part true-crime, and entirely entertaining, listen to the story of how the behemoth Oxford English Dictionary was made. You'll hang on every word as you discover that the dictionary's greatest contributor was also an insane murderer working from the confines of an asylum.

Fascinating on so many levels
Revisado: 11-11-24
I found Mr Minor’s story very tragic and touching, and I couldn’t help but think, if I were him, what a godsend the OED project would have been. But even more interesting are little details here and there about the construction of the OED with a kind of “crowdfunding” method, with the supporters providing words instead of dollars. And the way Mr. Minor went about creating a method of collating words, sources, definitions, quotes, etc in a way that ended up being very conducive with what the project required. And the author did a very nice job of narrating. All in all, very enjoyable and informative.

I laughed, I cried
Revisado: 10-28-24
Rarely do I break into a goofy grin or tears while listening to an audiobook in front of total strangers, but this made me do both. And I was too enmeshed in a fantastic story, with the best voice around - the incomparable James Marsters - to worry about how I looked. I don’t know how certain authors can convey human emotion just as well as they do a nail-biter of a battle scene, but Jim is one of them. I’m looking forward to the next installment, hopefully in 2025 I hear. Fingers crossed!

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

DNF for first time in forever
Revisado: 10-09-24
I’m shocked that a book that reads like an old video game, when we had only text on DOS and no graphics, would be so popular. I could see it being a niche thing, but wow. I really hated this and I forced myself to the halfway point! It did improve for a bit when we started having the group dynamic, but that got stale quickly. The best thing about this was the narrator, who made the best of some really crappy stuff.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Cute light story
Revisado: 09-09-24
This was a nice easy break from my typical fare. I like fantasy and gothic but usually heavier than this. The “romance novel” portion didn’t add much to the story. The wrap up of the surprise “mystery” element felt unearned. But I didn’t hate it.

Historia
"The Machine Stops" is a short science fiction story. It describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a "cell", with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Most humans welcome this development, as they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand experience. People forget that humans created the Machine, and treat it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their own.

Dystopia in our time is believable
Revisado: 06-24-24
The narrator gave an unemotional performance, you might say worthy of an automaton. Which makes sense. This tale is tragic but with hope. Will humanity’s tragic tale also contain hope? Time will tell.

Fun mysteries to solve. Tender stories of long-lived love. Most of all, some of the most fun, humorous, interesting characters I’ve had the pleasure to meet as of late. Great narrator too. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Revisado: 07-13-23
I’m 54 years old so don’t believe it when folks say this is a kid’s book. Gaiman has a better comprehension of the human condition than most, even though most of the humans in his books are no longer among the living. This was a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.
