Expected more!
Revisado: 06-05-23
Actually listened as my oldest daughter was reading this for school. Having been a fan of Rushdie in the past, I expected much more from this piece. The allegory was well built, but the names and everything was all over the place. Failed to capture me and draw me in. I believe it was both the performance and story itself that combined to be a disappointment.

Neat start, but overall underwhelming.
Revisado: 05-03-23
Enjoyed this overall. While they do state that it is less about the murders than it is about the hauntings at Fox Hollow Farm, the true excitement happens in the first hour or two of the book. It pulls you in and then essentially takes you down a drawn out slog though the hauntings that happened on the property to an unsatisfying conclusion of events. Not that it should be any different as it is non-fiction. Just feel it could have been arranged differently to keep the listener engaged.

Revisado: 05-01-23
Such an important story of the events of the Holocaust. We cannot allow schools and other entities to ban this book for students or other young adults. This is an important piece of literary history that covers a horrific event in world history that should NEVER be forgotten. We must never forget.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

The Book of Gin

Historia
In The Book of Gin, Richard Barnett traces the life of this beguiling spirit, once believed to cause a new kind of drunkenness. In the 18th century, gin-craze debauchery (and class conflict) inspired Hogarth's satirical masterpieces "Gin Lane" and "Beer Street". In the 19th century, gin was drunk by Napoleonic War naval heroes, at lavish gin palaces, and by homesick colonials, who mixed it with their bitter anti-malarial tonics.

Can’t believe this was something that was unfolding without the knowledge of most of the world. I mean, I’m not surprised, but more dumbfounded. Great recommendation by Rachel Maddow. On point with her other recommendations and her foreword was wonderful.

Outstanding Tale, Mediocre Performance
Revisado: 01-30-23
While not as dismal as most of the reviews I read before downloading this copy, I listened to this wonderful piece of literature for the first time in many years as my daughter has to read it for school and I wanted to be fresh to discuss it with her. Still just as timeless. The performance is not. He is quite droll, but I wouldn’t call it “the worst performance I’ve heard on audible” as others have commented. He is an author. Not a narrator; and rightfully so. Still worth it.

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

First time ‘reading’ the hobbit since I the first time when I read it in second grade. Granted it was a much harder read and experience then. The narration by Serkis is unbelievably good. Definitely give this iteration a try if you’ve never read it or want to relive the experience!

Revisado: 02-22-22
Was suggested this as a listen for Christmas and couldn’t be happier with that suggestion. This is one of the most interesting and enlightening views on history I have ever heard. The specific attention paid to mesoamerica is especially intriguing, and kept me engaged throughout the entire twenty-four hour reading.
If you are a fan of history and new ideas of history, this is a MUST listen. You will not regret it.
