Well narrated, but I prefer Reading/Kramer.

Ms. Pike did a bang-up job narrating "The Eye of the World." I feel she emoted well, and did a good job differentiating all the characters. I did feel her presentation was a bit too 'Gandalf: You Shall Not Pass.' for my taste.

For me it comes down to preferences. I've been a Reading/Kramer listener for +25 years. Familiarity plus quality is a high bar to get over.

I adore the Touchstone stories. They are like crack to me.
I was constantly distracted by mispronounced words or wrong words.

One of my favorite lines in this book is "...an act of sheer and implacable willpower.. " The narrator said 'impeccable'. That tossed me out of the story and I couldn't resume for several hours.

I'm not sure if it is worth complaining about an audiobook released 10 years ago, but oy-jeebus! I am not going to buy another Mercedes Lackey audiobook unheard. I will borrow them through my public library and then make the decision whether or not to purchase.

What would have made A Princess Bound better?

Take the time to prep the narrator. She mispronounced *a lot* of words, including names. The name that caused me to stop and mentally throw the book at a wall is either Isabeau or Ysabeau (don't have a text version). She pronounced it [ Is a boo ] and it should be said either as [ Is a bow ] or [ Ees a bow ].

Has A Princess Bound turned you off from other books in this genre?

not at all. The stories I listened to are OK. Not the best I've read, but OK.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The little girl voice was totally not to my taste. but my main objection is the uncorrected mispronounciations.
Also: Shame on the production staff for allowing the errors to get through, and shame for not allocating enough funds to take the time to do it right.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I have the option to return it.

Any additional comments?

(copy&pasted from another of my reviews)
Maybe offer incentives to the narrators for improving vocabulary, pronunciation skills? I have a huge vocabulary, but there are many words that I have seen, but have neither heard nor said. I feel it is unreasonable to expect that ordinary people be expected to correctly pronunce a word the first time it is encountered.

General comment, not book specific:
I listened to a lot books-on-tape from Recorded Books, and was always aghast at the retail prices of those titles. Never bought any because of that. (Thank you local public libraries!!!).

I would like to see a better balance between retail price and production quality. I am willing to pay some more if that means the quality will improve.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Mostly. I am a long-time E.Moon fan. However the numerous mispronounced words - both guesses and slips to close sound-similars becomes more and more distracting.

How could the performance have been better?

Take more time to prep the narrator.
--Made-up words aren't much of an issue for the Vatta books, but insist that the producers provide the narrator a recording (from the author if possible, please?) of those 'fictional' words so that the narrator knows how the word is meant to be said. Barring that, please give the narrator a list of those made-ups with pronunciation marks.

DNF. Men's Adventure Fiction is not to my taste

(The star rating is required. I'd prefer to have left that blank.)
Please note, I am trying to not "throw rocks." I consider men's adventure fiction to be the direct equivalent to romance novels - of which I consume plenty!
All I am saying is this sub-genre is not what I enjoy 'reading.'

I love the Korval novels. no exception here.
There are several word slips that I noticed.
Whenever I heard a slip, I wondered why the reader wasn't permitted to correct the error. And then I would hear another clumsy splice-in.
Rather distracting. I kept thinking "rush job."
