There’s a saying that goes along the lines of: the difference between your government and mine is much larger than the one between you and I. Cynthia Yoder’s book vividly depicts the story of an American in Palestine, whose mission is to help create the Arab American University’s English Department and teach English there. The author takes you on her 5-year-old journey of being a teacher in a conflict-ridden zone. She teaches her students English, and they, in turn, teach her about silence and listening, about getting used to having a gun pointed at your head, accepting people with different beliefs, and about taking life as it comes: this is life – Haik al-Haia. This American is welcomed with open arms in the people of Palestine’s homes and hearts. The narrative entwines grippingly personal details – it is her story and her experience after all – with historically accurate dates and events. If you like biographies and learning about history through storytelling, this is the book for you.
