Historia
Machine revolves around a group of teenagers - both locals and wealthy out-of-towners - during a single summer at the shore. Steinberg captures the pressures and demands of this world in a voice that effortlessly slides from collective to singular, as one girl recounts a night on which another girl drowned. Hoping to assuage her guilt and evade a similar fate, she pieces together the details of this tragedy, as well as the breakdown of her own family, and learns that no one, not even she, is blameless.

Stunning
Revisado: 05-02-22
Extremely daring! Just when I start to feel old I come across a fresh young voice. Sparse and beautifully vivid. Sophie Amoss narrating makes you feel you’re there. She’s fabulous as always. It took me more than one listen to fully grasp it but I loved re listening!

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Revisado: 12-20-21
My first Julia Heaberlin title and I’m excited to find her work.
seriously considered a second listen starting immediately but I’m going to let it marinate a while. Narration by total pros. Recently I listened again to a John Irving title M. Andrews narrates and would never guess he was the voice of Wyatt. New Hampshire to Texas he is FABULOUS.
More than a very smart psychological thriller. A meditation on the continual outward ripples caused by human violence. This beautiful voice examines how easily a trauma creates another trauma and another. People at risk remain at risk.
Excited to choose another title by Ms. Heaberlin

Historia
Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Blatty narrating is the cherry on top on top edition
Revisado: 12-01-20
I’ve read the Exorcist several times over the years. In narrating his work William Peter Blatty was stunning in his performances of the title’s characters,; Detective Kinderman and Father Karras especially.
This prose containing such beauty right alongside such ugliness is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Then or now.

Historia
Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort—a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other "Bunny", and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled "Smut Salon"....

Finding myself drawn to transgressive fiction since Fight Club. Chuck Palahniuk
I’ll definitely need another listen or two to glean more of Bunny. I was laughing then five minutes later crying.. Ultimately it’s a truly insightful look at several topics which are Hard! Authenticity or as close as some are able to get as twenty somethings in 2020 love and loneliness, to be sure
Sending Ms Mona vibes and good energy which whisper more like this pretty pretty please.

Absolutely a modern day fairy tale.
Revisado: 07-16-20
The prose was lyrical and harmonious. The characters are complex and well developed. I adore that this title truly expressed loneliness, and somehow made it poetry. It showed us acceptance and connectedness in such unlikely places.
Each of the characters has a special place in my heart. Strickland is one of the most interesting male characters I have read. I found myself alternately sympathetic toward then disgusted by him as he decompensated.

Great wrap up to the story. The last games were interesting as was Peeta’s transformation. Some of the District Thirteen stuff and the slog through the capital got a bit tiresome.

Historia
Armistead Maupin talks to Beth Anderson, Audible's publisher, about the adaptation of his novel The Night Listener. The book and the movie, which stars Robin Williams, Toni Collette, Rory Culkin, and Sandra Oh, were inspired by Maupin's real-life friendship with Anthony Godby Johnson, a young man who'd written a harrowing memoir about being abused, but whose very existence soon came into question. In this interview, Maupin reveals how tricky the overlap between fiction and reality can be.

Revisado: 02-14-20
Armistead Maupin despite enormous critical, success proves in the interview to be entirely down to earth, almost bashful at times. I wondered the first time listening to The Night Listener how biographical the sweet, sensitive and humorous Gabriel was. Quite a bit it seems. A must for any fan!

Really Enjoyed the narrator
Revisado: 02-06-20
I enjoyed this a lot reading this novel years ago. Im finding it a bit irritating this read this time. I remembered the Vietnam jargon and just attributed it to a need in the characte's identity. Richard is a childish daydreamer who as far as I can determine has never had a job. My issue is the frequent use of sixties slang terms that twenty somethings in the 90s did not use. hassle drag dope and scene were a few. I was waiting for the travelers to call law enforcement pigs but I guess Garland thought that would be over the top. The other problem which only served to call more attention to it is the two American travelers do a Keanu Reeves surfer dude act. That was a bit clever blonde young American men on a beach who purposely sound like so totally brain fried dude are actually students from Harvard studying literature. But the total combination of dead slang and in depth writing about old video games over shadows what could have been great IMHO.
