Historia
Spending her thirtieth birthday alone is not what dating columnist Cleo Wilder wanted, but she plans a solo retreat―at the insistence of her boss―in the name of re-energizing herself and adding a new perspective to her column. The remote Irish island she’s booked is a far cry from London, but at least it’s a chance to hunker down in a luxury cabin and indulge in some self-care while she figures out the next steps in her love life and her career.

Didn’t hold me
Revisado: 12-14-24
I utterly adored One Day in December and looked forward to this newest book by the same author. She is a great writer, but the story didn’t grab me. In fact, I started listening in November 2023 and had three and a half hours left. It took me a year to work up the desire to finish it.
In those last three hours of listening, I found little happens but introspection. So much introspection, so little plot. The pacing was just too slow and perhaps I’m just too old fashioned to embrace the alternative option of marrying yourself.
The performance was excellent. I would be willing to try another Josie Silver and put this down to me just not liking what was on the menu.

I love Mhairi’s books, and this one didn’t disappoint. In fact, it took twists I didn’t expect. The writing is always sharp, witty and heartfelt.

Loved it!
Revisado: 10-08-19
Another hit by Mhairi McFarlane. She writes witty chick-lit with a great facility with language. I was skeptical of someone from high school not recognising her, as that's a plot line in Here's Looking At You, but this book goes in many surprising places I didn't expect. Hurry up and write another Mhairi!

Brilliant! All the Feels.
Revisado: 05-26-19
An avid reader slash listener of all of Sophie’s books, she continues to surprise me. I’ve recently studied story structure and enjoyed picking out the inciting incident, progressive complications, turning point, crisis and climax in each scene. The writing made me feel invested in Fixxie and Seb and provided inspiration in how I need to milk the emotions in my own writing. Looking forward to the next...

Historia
Laurie is sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend, Sarah, giddily introduces her new boyfriend: the man from the bus.

Oh how I loved this book. It had echos of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones but differed enough to make it a captivating dramedy. Since it’s part of Reece’s book club I hope it’s been optioned as a film. Sending to all my friends.

Compelling story, incomparable narrator
Revisado: 01-08-19
I would not have stumbled across this book if it wasn't read by the incomparable Richard Armitage, as I've listened to most of his audio recordings. My limited experience with police procedural books left me unsure of what to expect. Joy Ellis has written a very compelling story, a fast listen the equivelant of an 'unputdownable' book, and I recommend it highly. Though there are gruesome events, the less tasty details are glossed over making it more palatable for me. I'm more interested in the mystery than the horror. I see there are several other books in this series narrated by Richard and I will be purchasing them.

Historia
Winner of such prestigious honors as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Award, Ian McEwan is justifiably regarded as a modern master. Set in 1972, Sweet Tooth follows Cambridge student Serena Frome, whose intelligence and beauty land her a job with England's intelligence agency, MI5. In an attempt to monitor writers' politics, MI5 tasks Serena with infiltrating the literary circle of author Tom Healy. But soon matters of trust and identity subvert the operation.

Oh, to write like Ian McEwan!
Revisado: 10-18-18
This was my first McEwan novel. As a spy novel, it wasn't what you might expect--no bombs or gadgets--but stick to the end for the plot twists. As for his prose, I'm envious at how he makes words so delicious. The narrator's performance also made this book a 5 star. I might buy a paper copy just to underline the brilliant sentences.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Pleasant Story. But rather laborious....
Revisado: 07-06-18
I ordered this because it had great reviews and was compared to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I lost interest at least 5 times and went onto other books, but was determined to finish slog through and finish this. Perhaps it's the Major's crusty voice that felt laborious. The narration is excellent, the story is well-written, but it was a chore to hear a stuffy old person moaning about everything.

They say Paris is always a good idea.... You know what I say? Paris would be a much better idea if I spoke the dang language. I can't even board the metro to visit the Louvre without ending up at the Moulin Rouge, and let's not even mention how I'll ever make it through a day at my new office. Fortunately my company hooks me up with my own personal translator. Ooh la la. Or should I say bloody hell? Because he's charming, witty, and British, and he brings the city to life for me.

Purchased because Richard Armitage narrated.
Revisado: 07-02-18
Top notch performances by the narrators. I love it when Richard does the American girl’s voice. The story is well-written. If Richard had not narrated I might have paid more attention to the ratings. My first clue should have been the half-shirted man on the cover with the photo-shopped abs. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters until it got into very descriptive sex scenes, several times. Personally, I like to read about the attraction, and prefer the sex to happen off the page. I recognise some might love the soft porn aspect of this book and congrats to them. I prefer more story to sex. Not a judgement, just a preference. Doesn’t take away from the authors talent or the narrators stellar performances. Will however press pause in future before I press buy just because Richard narrates.

F is for fabulous...
Revisado: 05-01-18
This was my first Jane Fallon story. It's well narrated and juicy in an I-can't-stop-listening-sort-of-way. I found myself wanting to google the contractor, check out Aimee's actress profile on IMDB and peruse the listings for Mel's flat. So much more to say but don't want to give away any spoilers. Can't wait to listen to my next Jane Fallon audiobook.
