Different from the other Cecelia Ahern books

I picked up this book thinking it contained short stories written in Cecelia Ahern's usual style. These stories were very different.

Girl in the mirror:
The beginning was eerie, bonechilling, and it had me hooked. However, the middle section was much less interesting, and the ending was just boring. This would have been a much better book if she had ended the book sooner, and managed to keep the extremely eerie feeling throughout the whole story. However, I did feel for the characters and wanted to find out how the story ended.

The memory maker:
This was more of a confusing story in that it switched between past and present and it sometimes took some time to realize the author had switched viewpoints again. This story was kind of boring and unstructured.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

As a huge Kinsella fan, I've been looking forward to reading this book. However, I was very disappointed. While parts of it was funny, most of the book was way below Kinsella's usual standard. I couldn't relate to any of the main characters, and most of the time I just wanted to scream at them. It was a totally unrealistic story (not necessarily a bad thing, as I loved Twenties girl by the same author), but for this book it just did not work.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrators had perfect voices for each character and they made the book come more alive.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was good at having different accents for different characters, but her pitch goes up towards the end of each sentence so everything sounds like a question. It got so annoying that I actually bought the kindle version to read the book instead. But there were a lot of time my only option was listening to the audiobook, and it got better after a while, maybe because the story was so compelling and I just really wanted to finish it.

I also found out that listening at 1,25 speed helped somewhat with the annoying narration.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I could not put it down. I opted to listen to a narrator I didn't really like the times I was unable to read (when walking for instance), just so I could find out what happened.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed book 1 in the series, but found book 2 to be long and boring and veeery uneventful. So allthough I was looking forward to book 3, I was unsure if I'd like it much. But it was great, much more like book 1 in the style.

Any additional comments?

This book made me long to experience a traditional British Christmas. I loved the atmosphere in the story.

What was most disappointing about Barry Schwartz’s story?

The author comes off as a very old man who just can't get used to the fact that you actually have choices in what jeans you can buy. He just keeps ranting on and on about the exact number of types of cereals etc he found at the store. One such story could have been a good example, but he just keeps droning on and on.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

He did an okay job, not sure you can make this material interesting no matter how you read it.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It worked really well as a sleeping "pill". If I was having trouble sleeping, I would listen to this as it is so boring that I usually feel asleep pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I mean that quite literally.
