Historia
Eleven-year-old Maybelle Lane collects sounds. She records the Louisiana crickets chirping, Momma strumming her guitar, their broken trailer door squeaking. But the crown jewel of her collection is a sound she didn't collect herself: an old recording of her daddy's warm-sunshine laugh, saved on an old phone's voicemail. It's the only thing she has of his, and the only thing she knows about him. Until the day she hears that laugh - his laugh - pouring out of the car radio. Going against Momma's wishes, Maybelle starts listening to her radio DJ daddy's new show....

Sweet characters and story
Revisado: 03-06-25
This was an enjoyable listen; the voice actor did a great job, and the characters in the story were all empathetic and easy to root for. Great story for kids, but I enjoyed it even as an adult.

Entertaining but occasionally slow
Revisado: 02-09-25
Overall, it was a good listen and the story kept me wanting to find out what would happen next. At times I felt the pacing dragged a bit, and the characters and their attitudes/actions were sometimes frustrating.

Historia
When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

A solid sequel
Revisado: 02-09-25
I enjoyed this follow-up to Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone; the plot kept me guessing and there were a lot of good twists and turns. Another interesting cast of characters with plenty of secrets as well, and I appreciated how all the many puzzle pieces came together in the end. I’ll definitely listen to the third one in the series!

Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Unsympathetic Characters
Revisado: 01-07-25
There was only one character in this book that was an even remotely sympathetic character—all of the others seemed to be pretty terrible (or at least really annoying) people, so it was hard to root for any of them, which made the reading less enjoyable (and I was much less invested in the outcome). I don’t think the reveal of the murder worked very well, as it felt like a bait and switch. I much prefer mysteries in which it’s plausible that any one of the characters could be the killer and you go back and forth in your theories—but then the reveal always makes total sense, in hindsight. The very end of this book was also not very believable, and I would have much preferred to end with the POV of the character who was more sympathetic.

Historia
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Flawed but empathetic characters
Revisado: 12-13-24
This was a fun audiobook. The main character, Vera, was both frustrating and empathetic at the same time; her humanity really shone through despite her personality quirks. The narrator did a great job with Vera’s voice as well. It was a good mystery, too, and kept me wanting to find out what would happen next. I did guess one of the surprise elements partway through but didn’t mind because I wasn’t 100% sure.

Historia
Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

Great characters and great plot twists
Revisado: 10-06-24
Always love when a book surprises me! For some listeners, the story might feel like it starts a bit slowly, but I quickly became invested in the two protagonists’ outcomes because they were well-developed characters and easy to root for. The mystery aspect of the novel picks up as it progresses. The build up was worth the payoff toward the end in terms of plot twists; I guessed one big thing in advance, but another was very surprising. The one thing I didn’t love is that I felt the voice actor for Owen had kind of unusual inflection/emphasis when speaking, saying lines of dialogue in a way that didn’t feel authentic. But I was able to get used to it and the book is definitely worth the listen despite that small annoyance.

Historia
No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won't say who fired the shot that killed their friend, Grant; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them. Kate Marino's senior year internship at the District Attorney's Office isn't exactly glamorous - more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen.

Entertaining mystery with a unique POV
Revisado: 09-25-24
There are a couple of elements to the story that really require you to suspend your disbelief, but overall it was a good mystery and held my interest. The male narrator’s POV was interesting because it used collective pronouns (“we” and “us”) for most of the book to hide the identity of the killer, but it worked because it reflected the groupthink and strategy the boys used of sticking together. The story also had a very satisfying (if a little implausible) climactic scene. Worth the listen, and I’ll be checking out more titles from this author.

Wonderful sequel
Revisado: 09-11-24
It’s rare you read (or listen to) a sequel that’s as remarkable as the original, but this one really delivers. Same wonderful narrator with her wonderful voices for different characters. And the story was full of heart and hope and love once again, despite also having a lot of grief and sadness, too. Beautiful story for upper middle grade or older.
