Historia
Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

Whoa, nice surprise
Revisado: 03-28-23
First, the performer reading the story was great. I'm not always someone who enjoys people that do voices for characters, but this worked well. Second, the story takes some time to get going. Part of the reason I chose to consume this book through Audible was that I initially got bored when reading the sample, but my sister insisted it was worth a chance. She was right. I was quite surprised about the turns this story took and don't mind the bittersweet ending as it's very Holly Black. I'm looking forward to the possibility of listening to another book related to these characters if Black decides to write more. I also hope that Ms. Amimi reads it again because I really enjoyed her voice.

Historia
Silent Spring meets Erin Brockovich in this eye-opening, riveting true story of the lawyer who spent two decades building a case against DuPont for its use of the hazardous, unregulated chemical PFOA, uncovering a history of environmental contamination that affects virtually every person on the planet, and the heartless behavior that kept it a secret for 60 years.

Incredibly necessary story
Revisado: 02-10-23
This is one of the most incredible and important modern stories to be told. It matters to everyone in the world because everyone is exposed to these chemicals. The narrator for the majority of the story is very good and matches the writer's tone throughout. When delivering accents of certain characters, they are genuine and not flat. I listened at 1.25x speed.
The writing is interesting and far more compelling than I ever thought would come from a such a science and law heavy story. Concepts are explained clearly so that audiences without such knowledge can understand what is going on or why something is important (like the finding of a study or a piece of litigation). I would listen while making dinner and found myself considering replacing my only non-stick pan only to think about the years of nonstick-wear I had already used. At the core of this story is the fact that we're still exposed to PFOAs and not very much is being done about it. I would recommend this book in my Audible and physical form. And I recommend telling everyone you know about what you learn in this book.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

A beautiful telling of life
Revisado: 04-23-22
This is one of the most incredible pieces of nonfiction I've listened to in years. A beautiful, almost dream-like telling of life critical to so much of ourselves. The book being narrated by the author himself gave it an intimate touch and you can hear the act of love and wonder that led to the creation this book. I was fascinated and curious the whole time, chasing lines of thinking I had not considered about life and the field of science in general. If you are even a little curious about this book, listen/read it. You will not be disappointed. It's an approachable work that anyone can enjoy.

Historia
Our ability to foresee and protect against natural catastrophes has never been greater; yet we consistently fail to heed the warnings and protect ourselves and our communities, with devastating consequences. What explains this contradiction? In The Ostrich Paradox, Wharton professors Robert Meyer and Howard Kunreuther draw on years of teaching and research to explain why disaster preparedness efforts consistently fall short.

Digestible and important
Revisado: 02-01-22
Audiobook is a good way to experience this book. The narrator is not too dry and the material of the book is interesting and important to consider. Full of real, widely known examples, the authors ground their work with empathy for all humans and propose tangible solutions for the issues that plague us all. Overall, a great book and audiobook.
