Historia
In this book, Mustafa Akyol, senior fellow at the Cato Institute and opinion writer for The New York Times, both diagnoses “the crisis of Islam” in the modern world and offers a way forward. Diving deep into Islamic theology, and also sharing lessons from his own life story, he reveals how Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries.

A new Hope not an old Dogma
Revisado: 06-05-22
I greatly enjoyed the writers analysis and dissection of the current Mullen minds. He brought all the major historic events that shaped the current problems Muslims face. I totally agree with him that we seems to have been stuck for centuries in the same battles the consumed us and prevented us from moving forwards. I believe we first need to get out of the hole is to open our hearts and emphasize an ethical and emotional stand taking the guide of our prophet. Let’s let a side and do many opinions and fights between the different factions and say “ Salam Alaykum “ with a smile when we greet each other’s ( or any one for that matter ) as the prophet was gentle , honest and respectful with all people around him.
Being committed to such simple stand and emphasizing the spiritual connection with one God in my mind is so important before we start tackling more complex issues for which every group will find the text that support their ideology .
Totally agree with the idea of isolating and protecting Islamic tradition and practice from the political arena. Nothing has messed and can mess with Islam as a universal humanitarian message like politics and seeking power and control .
A very highly recommended read ( or audio book ). Thank you again Mustafa Akol

Historia
At the Arab Spring's hopeful start, Alia Malek returned to Damascus to reclaim her grandmother's apartment, which had been lost to her family since Hafez al-Assad came to power in 1970. Its loss was central to her parents' decision to make their lives in America. In chronicling the people who lived in the Tahaan building, past and present, Alia portrays the Syrians—the Muslims, Christians, Jews, Armenians, and Kurds—who worked, loved, and suffered in close quarters, mirroring the political shifts in their country

Great book
Revisado: 03-06-22
Just finished the book “ The country that was our home” by Alia Malek. I enjoyed the writers eloquent skills, personal story telling and the reflection she was able to convey about her family history since the beginning on 1900’s as Syria was born then became independent finally falling under the control of one family for decades.
The unique things about Alia is
- she is very well qualified : a U.S. trained human rights attorney, Colombia university graduate journalist, a teacher of human rights at different colleges, and she worked as a humanitarian aid . A daughter to Syrian father from Midan and a Syrian mother from Hama’s country side , she lived her early life in Maryland while Syria lived in her heart since childhood.
- Alia lived the first two years of the revolution in Damascus and experienced it first hand enduring a lot of pressure at a time she could just stay safe in the US and rely on far away testimonials . She definitely showed courage reporting anonymously in major journals outlets risking her safety with the brutality of “ mukhabarat”
- Alia comes from a minority sect in Syria and her perspective stands strong against the notion that Assad regime is the only security and protecting minorities can have in Syria .
The book is a wonderful journey and I think it should be a must read - listen to for every Syrian let alone every human being with interest in Syria and the Middle East.
I hope that she works on an Arabic translation of the book, so the much of the isolated Arab audience due to language barrier can enjoy this work and learn from it .

Not just for Muslims : a connection with the devine
Revisado: 10-31-21
The book a a complete success : an eye opener for so many treasures in the Islamic text and the relationship with the Devine . The strength of the book comes from the continuous quotation of the Holy Quran . I enjoyed the emphasis on the love message of religions in general and Islam specifically, something frequently overlooked and belittled .
