The person narrating this book is not a voice artist. This reading of the book is an insult to Mr. Perry's work. It's so distracting that it's hard to focus on the itself. So dissapointing.

Spoiler Alert -Excellent telling of his Scientology story. I don't know how he survived but he did and then he fulfilled his destiny by helping others survive too.

What made the experience of listening to Some Danger Involved the most enjoyable?

The setting of Victorian London, the fascinating characters the pace and the wonderful narration kept me interested throughout.

What would have made Leave Me better?

The main character and her entire circle of family and friends are unsympathetic. Her kids get lice in their hair - and then she get's lice in her hair! Are you serious?

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Eva Kaminsky?

Didn't care for the narrator, her voice was depressing and words over-pronounced. She wasn't the worst I've heard but I wasn't loving her for sure. At the end she tells us that she's a SAG member, in the same unpleasant tone she used throughout the book. One thing I did appreciate about the narrator was that she didn't try to pitch her voice too low for the male characters, which can be so distracting and cause you to give up on a book.

Any additional comments?

I'm sure the author was the best writer in her writing classes but that doesn't make her worth paying to read. The story did keep chugging along and kept the book going so I did make it to the end.

Cant imagine why you would hire a woman who croaks out male voices to narrate a book with one female character and about a dozen males. Disservice to great book.

What would have made No Baggage better?

The author loves to use the word "experiment". When the narrator, who is the same person as the author, pronounces that word, it sounds like "ex-spearimint". The author also loves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Only she thinks they are called "peanut butter jelly sandwiches" with no "and" in the middle. Many examples are given of "cute" things that the main character's boyfriend says and does. Only problem is that they're not cute, not funny, he dresses like an idiot and one wonders what the attraction is, which is one of the major thrust's of this book. Plus when the main character gets her period while traveling, it becomes a story-line in the book. These are the pet-peeves i have about the book. They are highly noticeable because the story is not compelling enough to keep your interest. If i had a friend who wrote this book, i would say "well done" for an amateur attempt. Since it's supposed to be a professional publication, i say "meh" and not worth your time.

What do you think your next listen will be?

The Storied Life of AJ Fickry.

What three words best describe Clara Bensen’s voice?

Weird local accent and pronunciations. The tone is soft and sweet, however.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from No Baggage?

The menstrual cycle.

Would you try another book from Matthew Thomas and/or Mare Winningham?

No, Matthew Thomas bored me throughout most of the book. He forgets about secondary characters for long stretches, then they reappear. Events unfold and then drift away, never having a resolution. Relationships aren't mentioned and then suddenly they're supposed to be important to the main character. The main character, Eileen, is snobbish and unpleasant most of the time. Mare Winningham's dreary reading of the book matches Eileen's personality band that doesn't make it any easier to take.

What was most disappointing about Matthew Thomas’s story?

Worst of all, for endless chapters of the book, Eileen, who is a nurse, remains clueless about the fact that her husband has a major issue that she should have picking up on. I could have diagnosed the illness months or years faster than she does, if it were my husband.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mare Winningham?

Anyone besides the super annoying Brene Brown.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

This book needed a better editor. There's nothing "epic" about dragging a story out forever.
