Historia
Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young Black woman out late with a White child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.

Worth a listen

The narrator was phenomenal, and she really made the story a lot more interesting. While the book was definitely interesting and kept my attention, none of the characters were very likable.

Historia
“If I know why they are the way they are, then maybe I can learn why I am the way I am,” says Alex Tuchman of her parents. Now that her father is on his deathbed, Alex—a strong-headed lawyer, devoted mother, and loving sister—feels she can finally unearth the secrets of who Victor is and what he did over the course of his life and career. (A power-hungry real estate developer, he is, by all accounts, a bad man.) She travels to New Orleans to be with her family, but mostly to interrogate her tightlipped mother, Barbra.

The best part is the end

Found this story very tedious to get through, however the last two hours or so it becomes more engaging. I did enjoy the voice actor.

Slow-burning
Revisado: 10-28-23
The first half of the book was hard to follow and rather uninteresting. It picked up as perspective changed and the performers did a great job.

Historia
Ellory returns to Pine Brook to navigate senior year after a two-month suspension and summer away - no boyfriend, no friends. No going back. Tormented by some and sought out by others, troubled by a mysterious note-writer who won’t let Ellory forget, and consumed by guilt over her not entirely innocent role in everything and everyone she’s lost, Ellory finds that even in the present, the past is everywhere. The path forward isn’t a straight line. And moving on will mean sorting the truth from the lies - the lies Ellory has been telling herself.

Predictable, slightly boring
Revisado: 08-20-23
It was very easy to predict where this story would go from the start. Though the performance was great, I wouldn’t recommend the book.

Historia
It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children - four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness - sneak out to hear their fortunes, A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

Slow-moving but thought-provoking
Revisado: 05-17-23
The storyline was incredibly slow-moving and rather boring. I did like the ideas presented throughout but not a fan of the format. Also found the narrator’s voice annoying at times.

Easy read, but nothing earth-shattering
Revisado: 01-27-23
Entertaining enough to finish, but nothing is this book is particularly thought-provoking. The prose is rather elementary which makes the characters feel flat and unlikable. The narrators are good.

I'm glad I listened to this one!
Revisado: 05-07-20
Almost didn't purchase this one as many of the reviews made me nervous that it would be too gory to get through. There are definitely some cringey passages, but please don't let them scare you off from an otherwise great story.
If you can watch shows like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Ozark, you will have no trouble getting through this and the storyline is worth it!

Historia
Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater; she lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds; she likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps; she has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, The Silent Wife is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept.

Not what I was expecting.
Revisado: 12-25-18
The novel's description was promising. Though the premise seemed rather simple, I figured there had to be some sort of twist to make the novel stand out.
However, I waited the entire book for a twist that never came. I felt the storyline was rather boring and unengaging. I found my mind wandering as I waited for something to happen. When the reading was over, I sat there thinking, "really!?" and had to check the Audible app to make sure I didn't accidentally skip ahead to the end and miss something somehow.
While I wouldn't call it a bad story, I also wouldn't recommend it when there are so many other great novels to choose from.
