Historia
Matthew Riker keeps to himself, doesn't cause trouble, and never talks about his past. But after a chance encounter with a woman and a small child on the run, Riker will have to make a choice: use his hard-won skills to protect two innocent victims, or stay in the safety of his quiet life. What follows is an adrenaline-soaked thrill ride that will take Riker on a cross-country chase, through the seedy underbelly of a New York criminal empire, and into the darkest places of the human heart.

Mostly good, with one big weakness
Revisado: 01-04-24
Another former special forces member off to fix some of the problems in a screwed up world. It’s always good to hear bad things happening to bad people, especially human traffickers. I easily got onboard with that.
The one weakness I hate to hear in these stories is some idea that silencers actually silence firearms; they don’t. Maybe they do in Hollywood, but in the real world they still make significant noise.

Narrator needs help
Revisado: 11-10-23
Good story, and good series so far. I think the narrator has the skill, but as someone who grew up in the South, the phony Southern accents have become too much. He seems to do Joe’s voice well, but goes in the ditch on most the others. Except the Australian investigator; he does him well.

Interesting
Revisado: 11-04-23
A little too intricate at times. Walker often seems a little misplaced in his role; it seems his actuarial background could have been factored in a little more.
Overall it’s interesting in kind of a strange way.

Too Hollywood
Revisado: 10-15-23
I wanted to like this book, but it fails too many ways. Only Hollywood believes a silencer/suppressor can bring a gun’s sound down to “a hot knife in butter”.
Another issue is how they create these elite assassins and special force members, who still manage to are still able to have mental failures in the simplest circumstances. I get that they are not perfect, but the mental lapses are really pathetic ones.
Knowing what I know now, I would have skipped this book.

Phony Hollywood Fluff
Revisado: 09-18-23
Narrator was ok; the story is too much phony, Hollywood fluff. The main character might have some admirable qualities in Hollywood, but not the real world. None of the characters left any kind of favorable impression.

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

I really hoped for better
Revisado: 08-20-23
I really wanted to like this book. The setting and the characters seemed to create a good story to enjoy, and the narration was good.
However, once the writer showed they needed to throw in the F-bombs, and everything needed to be GD this and GD that, they exposed the low quality of the book.
If an author relies on being vulgar to provide spice or color to their writing it destroys their credibility. It truly weakens their product, reduces it to tabloid trash, and ruins a story that, initially, seemed to have good potential.
Traveling with young children, I was hoping I’d found a new series that we could all enjoy, like Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie; we were sadly mistaken.
Thankfully there are still lots of wonderful writers providing good literary experiences.
This is not one of them, and we won’t waste anymore time or money on them.
