depressing stuff!!
Revisado: 07-14-24
if youre just trying to get through the classics as a bucket list thing, this is one way to do it. maggie gyllenhaal's narration is superb. but while i enjoyed a lot of war and peace, i found this book to be mostly about why humanity is pathetic and everybody sucks. guessing tolstoy was in a pretty dark place when he wrote this. and its not dark in a "life is hard but its also beautiful/ theres hope!" kind of way, in spite of some philosophical silver linings at the end (id recommend just reading the last few chapters and ignoring everything else if you want a taste of A.K.). its dark in the "you are all idiots are your desires are all evil" kind of way. of all the famous books ive listened to pre 1900 or so, such as don quixote, middlemarch, count of monte cristo, crime and punishment, and moby dick, this was by far my least favorite. but hey, that might just be me. recommend listening to basically anything else if you arent just checking this one off your list like i was-

Historia
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

Historia
Christianity didn't have to become the dominant religion in the West. It easily could have remained a sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. In The Triumph of Christianity, Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, shows how a religion whose first believers were 20 or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some 30 million people in just four centuries.

Lively, absorbing, often outrageously funny, Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is a work of genius, an undisputed classic that has held a special appeal for each generation of readers. The Tales gathers 29 of literature's most enduring (and endearing) characters in a vivid group portrait that captures the full spectrum of medieval society, from the exalted Knight to the humble Plowman. This unabridged work is based on the new translation.

The second novel in the wildly popular First Law Trilogy from New York Times best seller Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It's enough to make a torturer want to run - if he could even walk without a stick. Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory.

Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. well written, incredible characters, voice actors perfect. fun start to a fantasy series. only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that im still not feeling super engaged by the plot/ setting (even though I love the unique and entertaining characters. prob best written characters in any book I've ever read. And certain aspects of the world building- like the ban on eating human flesh and the house of the maker- are definitely interesting/ cool). would recommend to any scifi/ fantasy lovers.

Historia
In this brilliantly original book, Camille Paglia identifies some of the major patterns that have endured in western culture from ancient Egypt and Greece to the present. According to Paglia, one source of continuity is paganism, which, undefeated by Judeo-Christianity, continues to flourish in art, eroticism, astrology, and pop culture. Others, she says, are androgyny, sadism, and the aggressive western eye, which has created our art and cinema.

interesting words from one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th century. only reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is I was expecting a philosophy book masquerading as erotic art history and actually it's mostly erotic art history. still amazing and insightful, just maybe don't get this if you are expecting one of paglia's lectures primarily on western culture, bc (as the title perhaps might suggest) this book is basically about sex :). however would recommend first few chapters to anyone, her thoughts there are far reaching on not primarily focused on literary criticism. I also personally really enjoyed the part on Wilde. happy reading all-
