Historia
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a tragic world in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud. This play, set in an extraordinary world, has become the quintessential story of young love. This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare's classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

Well acted, the perfect play
Revisado: 01-14-25
You know the play: it’s one of the best ever. The performance isn’t quite that good, but it is excellent.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Perhaps the Best Performance on Audiobook
Revisado: 01-11-25
The book is very good. It gets a little too “out there” and can spend too much time with too many problems, but it it exciting and interesting.
The real reason you should get the audible version is because the performance is one of the best I’ve heard. The voices, the emotions, the tempo, and tone are almost perfect through.

Historia
Christopher Marlowe's play about a man who sells his soul to the devil is not only one of the first of many works to explore this theme but also one of the most startling. Eschewing the usual division of the drama into acts, it presents the story of Faustus' fall in a series of apparently disconnected scenes. However, the integrity of the drama is maintained by the remorseless unraveling of Faustus' fortunes as he approaches his inevitable damnation.

Terrible Voice Acting
Revisado: 01-09-25
The story is interesting and worth a read, but stay clear of this atrocious performance. Some actors sound like robots, some obviously don’t understand their lines, women play male roles, and the audio quality is bad.

Great translation and good performance. The addition of Pearl, Sir Orfeo, and Tolkien’s commentary make this even better.

Horrendous Play; Good Study Guide

Horrendous Play; Good Study Guide
Revisado: 11-04-24
The play is one of the worst I’ve ever read. The author obviously hates his audience as he repeatedly tells us things he should show us, and does so with ham-fisted, overwrought hyperbole. The voice cast make the play so bad that I was laughing through half of it. Perhaps it was their choice to lean into the writing, or perhaps it is impossible to take this characters seriously without editing the dialogue as all recent screen productions have done. Either way, this play is even worse listened to than read.
Having said that, this is a study guide. This guide is probably good in preparing you for exams: it presents an interpretation which teachers will likely find sympathetic. However, a more diverse and intellectually deep analysis would have done students more good.

Historia
Modernity developed only in the West - in Europe and North America. Nowhere else did science and democracy arise; nowhere else was slavery outlawed. Only Westerners invented chimneys, musical scores, telescopes, eyeglasses, pianos, electric lights, aspirin, and soap. The question is, why? Unfortunately, that question has become so politically incorrect that most scholars avoid it. But acclaimed author Rodney Stark provides the answers in this sweeping new look at Western civilization.

A Reassessment of Popular, Mistaken Claims About the West
Revisado: 10-24-24
This is basically a survey of Western civilization from the time of Ancient Greece until the 21st century. It brings a ton of research to bear on popular misconceptions on the progress of the West and explains why modernity uniquely happened there.

Historia
This highly anticipated debut from Matt Walsh of The Blaze demands that conservative voters make a last stand and fight for the moral center of America. The Trump presidency and Republican Congress provides an urgent opportunity to stop the Left's value-bending march to destroy the culture of our country. Republican control of the presidency, senate, and House of Representatives for the next two years is a precious - and fleeting - gift to conservatives.

Alternatively funny and depressing
Revisado: 08-22-24
Walsh makes good arguments against abortion, gender ideology, and the left in general, but his arguments on marriage aren’t nearly as coherent. He doesn’t tread much new ground and offers very little in how to move forward other than the obvious: faith in God. Still, it is interesting and informative, and worth the couple of hours it will take you to read this.

A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.

Engrossing story and psychological study of man
Revisado: 05-28-24
This is a novel first and foremost, and as a story, this book is excellent. It is tense, engrossing, tragic, and funny. As a psychological study of man, the book is enlightening. As a criticism of rationalism, scientism, and the subjectivity of morals, the book is crushing.

Loved the story, performance just ok
Revisado: 04-29-24
If anyone has ever blended the myths of Atlantis and Arthur into the history of England and Christianity before, I’ve never seen it. This is an excellent concept excellently executed, and despite knowledge of the subject I was surprised at where the story led. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Christianity is in crisis in the West. The Inkling friend of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, Owen Barfield, analysed why. He developed an account of our spiritual predicament that is radical and illuminating. Barfield realized that the human experience of life shifts fundamentally over periods of cultural time. Our perception of nature, the cosmos, and the divine changes dramatically across history.

Interesting but unconvincing view Christianity
Revisado: 04-29-24
I enjoyed and learned a lot from discussion of Barfield’s philosophy. I have read Barfield in the past and found him difficult to penetrate. Vernon does a good job making difficult concepts easy to understand. He is less successful in translating these ideas to Christianity. Still, his views are interesting and worthy of consideration.
