Historia
Horned gods have influenced the development of many magical traditions. This book explores the deep spiritual and historical roots of these gods, and shares rituals and activities designed to help you get closer to them. From Ancient Greece to the Renaissance, to the contemporary age of witchcraft and ritual magick, horned deities have been honored as gods of nature, sex, fertility, passion, sacrifice, death, and rebirth. The Horned God of the Witches reveals the origins and features of their most common guises.

Very different premise
Revisado: 09-19-23
I enjoy historical mysteries, but I find that they tend to be very alike, really. This one is surprisingly different. I’ll seek out more ny the author.
The narrator is quite good—his command of character voices allowed me to sink into the story, which isn’t always possible if the narrator is awkward.

Historia
Flavia Albia is the adopted daughter of Marcus Didius Falco and Helena Justina. From her mother, she learned how to blend in at all levels of society; from her father, she learned the tricks of their mutual professional trade. But her wits and (frequently) sharp tongue are hers alone. Now, working as a private informer in Rome during the reign of Domitian, Flavia has taken over her father’s old ramshackle digs at Fountain Court in the Surbura district, where she plies her trade with energy, determination, and the usual Falco luck.

I was afraid of Flavia Alba because I loved Falco so much. She’s every bit her own person and every bit as wonderful. I’m glad I finally succumbed

In this compelling, powerful book, highly respected writer and commentator Jack Holland sets out to answer a daunting question: How do you explain the oppression and brutalization of half the world's population by the other half, throughout history? The result takes the listener on an eye-opening journey through centuries, continents, and civilizations as it looks at both historical and contemporary attitudes to women.

New ways to think about an old problem.
Revisado: 06-16-22
I’m not really sure why I chose to listen to this. I’m a well-educated woman. I have far too much first hand experience the insidious kinds misogyny common in Western society. And, in truth, there wasn’t much here that was new to me.
But Jack Holland gave me new ways to think about a problem. New perspectives. Indeed, new ways of formulating the problem.
What more could one reasonably as for? I am grateful to Jack Holland for having written it, and to his widow and daughter for ensuring that it found publication.

Historia
Alexia Maccon, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the midafternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears, leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.

I love all of Gail Carriger’s work. The Parasol Protectorate, the Shifters…. I’m on my 3rd read-through of the Heroine’s Journey. (Gah, you mean she’s a scholar TOO?)
Wit. Truly witty, and that doesn’t happen so much any more.

Historia
On the heels of her triumphant How to Be a Victorian, Ruth Goodman travels even further back in English history to the era closest to her heart, the dramatic period from the crowning of Henry VII to the death of Elizabeth I. Drawing on her own adventures living in re-created Tudor conditions, Goodman serves as our intrepid guide to 16th-century living. Proceeding from daybreak to bedtime, this charming, illustrative work celebrates the ordinary lives of those who labored through the era.

Pity about the narrator
Revisado: 06-20-20
The book itself is superb. Interesting, and written by someone who has BTDT. How many people can say that about Tudor life?
Unfortunately the narrator read the text as though it were just a string of unrelated words. No sense of sentences or paragraphs, so thoughts ran together and I found myself working hard to identify where one subject ended and another began.

Historia
In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection.

Wit is so rare. Wit combined with a delicious sense of the absurd rarer still. If these are to your taste—and they’re certainly to mine—Thursday Next will become a fast favorite.
