Light Story / Meh Narration
Revisado: 03-27-23
This was my first Amy Poeppel novel; it was a light, easy story that was entertaining, but not great. A lot of the characters were highly annoying and unlikable. The main character’s “friends” aren’t the kind of friends I would keep around!
The narrator wasn’t very good. She often confused voices and characters, making it hard to follow along. She would added pauses/stops to sentences where there shouldn’t have been. And the way she read a character made them unlikable, even though they weren’t supposed to be.
Overall, I would read/listen to another Amy Poeppel novel, but I’ll avoid audio books read by the narrator!

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

British Royal Family is Toxic!
Revisado: 02-10-23
Wow. Presuming, Prince Harry is telling the truth (as he saw and experienced it), the British royal family (and their employees) are toxic and emotionally abusive. I simultaneously dislike them, and feel bad for them. I’m happy that Prince Harry had the courage and strength to get out of such a horrible environment. Let’s hope William will open his eyes & change the way things work in the monarchy, especially so his children can be emotionally healthy and happy. (Although, based on his behavior, according to Prince Harry, I doubt it’ll happen).

A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

Another intellectually stimulating story!
Revisado: 01-08-23
I love Louise Penny books, and how she introduces me to so many new things! Whether it’s artwork, music, history or books, she always manages to find an interesting quirk and weave it into the story.
The only criticism I have is of Jean-Guy’s character. It drives me crazy that despite all of the love and support Armand has shown him, and all of his character growth, he (Jean Guy) still reverts to being an insecure, whiny child who almost sabotages his relationships and work. I wouldn’t mind it so much if he recognized this behavior and talked himself out of it, but that doesn’t happen; it’s always Armand who shows him the way. Grow up, Jean Guy!

Good Story, just hard to follow audio version
Revisado: 01-08-23
Like all of the other Strike novels, this story is smart, complicated and interesting. However, the audio version of this book is hard to follow, because there are so many online usernames, emails, and online/text conversations. Also, there are so many characters, a PDF of the characters & their online user names and emails would’ve been helpful. (Publishers often say a PDF will show up in the Audible library, but I’ve never been able to see one/find one). The narrator does a great job, but because of the difficulty with the online/text conversations, I gave the book three stars for the performance. (No matter who the narrator, I could never give this a five star performance just because of the nature of the story).
Lastly, when is the actual romance going to happen between Strike and Robin? I know there’s the Moonlighting problem (everyone wanted Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard to get together, and when they finally did, the show went downhill and was canceled), but come on! Can’t two adults have an honest conversation with each other and admit their feelings and concerns? It would be a nice side-story with character development to see how they handle a relationship.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Fantastic Narration!
Revisado: 07-24-22
Phillipa Soo was the perfect narrator for this book! (I hope she narrates more books)! Actors should always narrate books, they add so much more life to the characters than a non-actor.
The story was completely unbelievable, but it was fun and I enjoyed it anyway! There was the annoying, yet typical & clichéd misunderstanding between the two love interests, which made them break up, but of course, they got back together. What’s wrong with just admitting they made a mistake and they love each other?! Oh I know, publishers want money and they want to extend the story. (I just sped up the reading to get through that nonsense quicker). Other than that small blip, I recommend listening to this light, easy, and fun story!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 06-17-22
This is a great story with great characters! I didn’t give it a full five stars overall because the book ended too soon. There is an epilogue, but it’s not 100% satisfying. I want to know how the characters got to where they were instead of just seeing them in their future. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book!

Great news people, not great actors
Revisado: 06-02-22
I watch the Today show every morning and was excited to listen to this performance. Unfortunately, while the cast is great at reporting the news, they’re not so great acting out a script. If I had watched the show live, it may have made more sense, but with the accents and the talking over each other, I just couldn’t follow the story. I couldn’t even finish it-15 minutes in and I was done. Sorry Today show cast, I still love you and I’ll keep watching the Today show!

Historia
From Rose Tremain comes the Booker Prize short-listed novel that “restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honor” ( New York Times). Robert Merivel, son of a glove maker and an aspiring physician, finds his fortunes transformed when he is given a position at the court of King Charles II. Merivel slips easily into a life of luxury and idleness, enthusiastically enjoying the women and wine of the vibrant Restoration age. But when he’s called on to serve the king in an unusual role, he transgresses the one law he is forbidden to break and is brutally cast out from his newfound paradise.

BOOOOOOORING!
Revisado: 05-11-22
It’s a good thing this book was free; otherwise I’d be asking audible for a refund. The story was terribly boring & none of the characters were likable or relatable. This is only the second book I’ve had to abandon without finishing, it was that bad. (The first was the Monkey Wrench Gang). I just don’t understand how some people gave this such wonderful reviews and said it was the best book ever, to each his/her own, I guess.
The reader had different voices to distinguish the characters, which I normally like, but in this case, it was difficult to understand what he was saying.
Overall, if you have something better to read (the dictionary, the revised US tax code, etc.), don’t waste your time with this book!!

Depressing!
Revisado: 10-04-21
I really enjoy Kristan Higgins books, but this one was a disappointment. Nevertheless, I’m still a fan and Im looking forward to her next book.
It took me a few months to get through this book (which is significantly longer compared to books I truly enjoy). The first half of the book is equal parts sad, depressing & schmaltzy, which continues throughout the entire book, but at least the second half includes some emotional movement and hope.
While I liked that a man read the man’s perspective , and a woman for the woman’s, neither narrator was great. Xe Sands reads her parts in a vocal fry register, which is extremely annoying!!
If you’ve never listened/read a Kristan Higgins book, don’t start with this one- it’ll turn you off of her other books, which really are good.
