Historia
Riley Kennedy’s emails keep getting crossed with her male colleague, Kennedy Riley. The infuriating man forwards them along with his annoying commentary and unsolicited advice. At least she never has to see him in person, since they work in different locations…until they come face to face at the office holiday party.

literally gagged
Revisado: 02-23-25
This book made me gag on multiple occasions. I would have DNF'd about 30 minutes in but I was on a time crunch to finish my reading goal for 2022. There is definitely some potential with this book, a great enemies to lovers/fake dating trope with the fun addition of the Kennedy Riley - Riley Kennedy conundrum. But even how their story starts has a plot hole the author tried to fill and failed. Riley writes into an advise column but doesn't give her email address (somehow?!) and then the person emails Kennedy Riley the response (having simply mixed up the names), the author tries to explain this away with the fact that Riley didn't put an email in at all, but if that was the case I highly doubt someone is going to take the time to find a work email and respond to it.
Back to the gagging, there are so many overly corning gross things that Kennedy says to Riley in an attempt to be sexy or sweet or whatever it is he's trying at that Kennedy actually falls for. Also, every chapter we were in Kennedy's head were torture.
-"Hearing that no man had planted his flag on planet Riley for a long time made me a little crazy" and they're all this bad.
Save yourself the time and do literally anything else.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Murderbot is out there doing the literal bare minimum at their job as a security bot, and I love it.
<blockquote>Confession time: I don't actually know where we are.... I hadn't looked at the maps yet and I'd barely looked at the survey package. In my defense, we'd been here twenty-two planetary days and I hadn't had to do anything but stand around watching humans make scans or take samples of dirt, rocks, water, and leaves. The sense of urgency just wasn't there. Also, you may have noticed, I don't care.</blockquote>
They managed to hack their system, so they don't have to listen to commands any more. They do follow through on the commands, because they don't wanna get found out, but mainly they just want to keep getting to watch their soaps:
"It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don’t know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure."
I really enjoyed the book. The ending felt odd, like it didn't quite match up.
Also, I listened to the book. And while the narrator did a good job of being a monotone AI bot, they spoke so slow. I had to up it to 1.5 just to be able to focus.

-K. loraine & Meh Anne
After faking her death and tracking down a hacker in Alaska for a new identity, Rosie is ready to start the next chapter of her life. She makes a deal with a Demon to hide that she's a vampire, but it's chill, he only wants her body and her blood whenever he calls upon her. But so do the two shifter twins in town. And that hacker from earlier. Also... the husband she left behind.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

He makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.
Turns out the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth, not our Earth anyway. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda and they're in trouble.
My Thoughts:
This was just plain old fun. I loved everything about this book. John Scalzi is a fantastic author, I've rad a couple of his books now and have loved them all.
This was a lighthearted, funny listen. It doesn't take itself too seriously, here's the author's note:
“KPS is not, and I say this with absolutely no slight intended, a brooding symphony of a novel. It’s a pop song. It’s meant to be light and catchy, with three minutes of hooks and choruses for you to sing along with, and then you’re done and you go on with your day, hopefully with a smile on your face. I had fun writing this, and I needed to have fun writing this. We all need a pop song from time to time, particularly after a stretch of darkness.”

Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone
⭐⭐⭐
The narrator was fantastic on this one and it was switched over to audio from written wonderfully. Yet, the story just didn't keep my attention. I appreciated that our main character is breaking the fourth wall for us and reminding us of information we may have forgotten about. And that he sticks to the rules (commandments) on how to write a proper mystery novel.
I will say, while I did guess the killer, I didn't even come close to figuring out the twist!

Extinction Machine (Joe Ledger #5)
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Joe Ledger and Echo Team are back at it again! And damn, did this one hit. We're introduced to new characters just for them to die off a couple chapters later. We got a blast from the past. I don't think anyone makes it out of this book the same way they were when it started!
Aliens! Possibly aliens this time! 👽🛸
Joe's got a new lady friend too. I'm not a huge fan of her, she's pretty judgemental, but he's got a type I suppose. Hopefully she manages to survive only than just through the next one, Joe could use some happiness.
Happy to report, Ghost is still going strong here. If he ever does, I'll riot.
Ray Porter as always did a fantastic job at narrating.
Anyway, on to the next one. I don't know what Jonathan Maberry puts in these books, crack cocaine is my only guess.

Code Zero (Joe Ledger Book 6)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the best in the series since the first one! The zombies are back! 🧟♀️ And it's the same pathogen from the first book causing them. Which was fun once we learn that, remembering the horror that came with the gen 12 zombies vs the gen 6s.
Mother Night has figured out how to get access and sent the DMS on the hunt trying to stop it. So many deaths in this one. If I thought we lost a lot of characters in the last book, @jonathanmaberry was probably just sitting in his evil lair laughing at me.
"Muawahahahaha" - Jonathan Maberry probably
I did a combo listen/read for this book and as always @the.ray.porter knocked it out of the park!

Historia
On opening day of the new baseball season a small model-kit airplane flies down from the stands and buzzes the mound, where a decorated veteran pilot is about to throw out the first ball. The toy plane is the exact replica of the one flown by the war hero. Everyone laughs, thinking it's a prank or a publicity stunt. Until it explodes, killing dozens. Seconds later a swarm of killer drones descend upon the picnicked crowd, each one carrying a powerful bomb. All across the country artificial intelligence drive systems in cars, commuter trains and even fighter planes go out of control.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the third Joe Ledger book I've finished this month. I don't know what @jonathanmaberry is putting in these ones but I'm hooked again!
This definitely seems like one of the worst Echo Team has faced so far in the series. Which I feel I find myself saying with each book.
This one kicked off with a bang and never once let up!
I did a combo of listening/reading this one, because I just had to keep up with the story!
One of these days I'll have to go back and read all the little interlude books between each main one.

"Run away with me. You like tea. I like books. Care to open a shop and forget the world exists?"
Can't Spell Treason Without Tea | Rebecca Thorne
⭐⭐⭐
Reyna (a queen's guard) abandons her post and runs away with her girlfriend Kianthe (a powerful mage) to the small town of Tawney where they open a tea shop. They have to deal with bandits, dragon attacks, secret identities, and competing ownership of the town.
This was a really slow start for me and I ended up having to switch to audio, which did help. But, I struggled immensely with keeping the characters straight, not just the two MCd, but the side characters too.
I think it's time for me to accept that cozy fantasy isn't really my genre. I wanted more excitement. The dragon attack scene was fun, but short, that sorta thing. A lot of the time I was just bored during the book.
