A moving story
Revisado: 08-01-09
This was a great read. A complex but real situation with complex and real people. With an unexpected twist into the bargain. Quite moving

Historia
Set in the turbulent times of 12th century England where civil war, famine, religious strife, and battles over royal succession tore lives and families apart, The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of the building of a magnificent cathedral. Against this richly imagined backdrop, filled with intrigue and treachery, Ken Follett draws the reader irresistibly into a wonderful epic of family drama, violent conflict, and unswerving ambition.

Long and heavy

Well this certainly killed time in the car, but how it drags on. Not my best read of the year.

This was a lovely book, if a bit dark. It certainly kept me entertained and wondering where it would go next.

Historia
There's a gathering of high-achieving ladies at the remote and expensive Castle Spa over the 10 days of Christmas and New Year. None of them have met before. Have they no homes to go to? Why have they put their lives on hold? Perhaps they think they've come to seek (through Botox, aromatherapy, and extravagant pampering) a better understanding of their lives?

What an entertaining writer Fay Weldon is. This was a nice light-hearted read. A bit like several short stories stuck together, but then each book I've read from this author is quite different.

Historia
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

I loved this audiobook, although it couldn't live up to The Kite Runner. The narrator was a bit difficult to understand at times, and a bit flat in delivery, but the story won through.

Historia
This is the story of a man who loved two women, and one of them killed him. Some people have dreams that are so outrageous that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Percy Fawcett, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong are among such individuals. But what if one man had such a dream, and when he'd achieved it, there was no proof that he had fulfilled his ambition?

An unexpected find
Revisado: 08-01-09
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Despite the fairly dead-pan style, the story still got me in. I really had no idea what it was about before I listened to it - quite a find. And my husband may even enjoy it too!

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-01-09
Story-line has lots of potential, but the action is not believable and the plot becomes too predictable. Couldn't possibly kill off the bad guy until the story had led to the end of the trail. Maybe Dan Brown was trying to write a screen play, not a novel.
