Historia
For all of the West's failings—terrible food, cold weather and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few—it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise.

a loveletter with an amusingly sarcastic bent
Revisado: 07-18-22
At its strongest when the author/narrator recounts family and national history, Konstantin Kisin brings an important perspective and lived experience to the discussion of culture in the West.
as a narrator, Konstantin takes a chapter or two to get into the flow. His relaxed, personable voice never quite manifests, but he still gives a serviceable and coherent reading of the work.

Historia
In the war for control of the galaxy between the armies of the dark side and the Republic, former Jedi Master turned ruthless Sith Lord Count Dooku has grown ever more brutal in his tactics. Despite the powers of the Jedi and the military prowess of their clone army, the sheer number of fatalities is taking a terrible toll. And when Dooku orders the massacre of a flotilla of helpless refugees, the Jedi Council feels it has no choice but to take drastic action: targeting the man responsible for so many war atrocities, Count Dooku himself.

serviceable
Revisado: 04-05-19
how do you rate a book that is part of such a large, extended story as Star Wars?
As a stand alone novel, this book is just "okay". A three star out of five, no more.
It might get better, or perhaps worse, if the reader were familiar with the movies, but it only really works when the reader is a fan of the Clone Wars cartoons. ( which are the best Star Wars property since Return of the Jedi)
A fan of those cartoons will be carried along by the narrator's voice talent, which only a full cast could improve upon. (audio-format, of course)
The novel, like much of Star Wars, suffers in the ambiguity of the Force and just what can or cannot be done with it.
plot armor gets thick, at times, as well, and some drama is lost by knowing that certain characters can never really be in danger.
Lastly, without spoilers, relationships in the novel seem forced, at times, indecision is rife, and certain choices that should have weight seem to be taken on a whim...then taken back almost immediately.
What should have been epic turns rather blase as the emotions the reader are meant to experience are, in the end, unearned by the story as written.
But, if you are a fan of the Clone Wars cartoon, i think you will enjoy this quite a bit.

Historia
Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. One of Dostoevsky’s five major novels, Devils follows the travails of a small provincial town beset by a band of modish radicals - and in so doing presents a devastating depiction of life and politics in late 19th-century Imperial Russia.

not up to series standards
Revisado: 05-16-18
In a series that has quite a bit of ...let's call it: "convenient personality quirks", this book takes them to absurd levels. That could work in a comedy, but not in a book that takes itself and its story seriously.

Complete lack of understanding of human behavior and reactions makes an implausible, but potentially interesting, concept into an unbelievable and unrelateable tale.
Good imagery, however, and the narration is well done.

Historia
Life ashore may once again be the undoing of Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy. With the outbreak of peace in 1814, Aubrey fears being "yellowed" - that is, nominally promoted to the rank of admiral without a squadron to command. But Stephen Maturin returns from France with the news that the Chileans, to secure their independence, require an English navy. And just as Jack is dusting off his captain's hat, an urgent dispatch orders him to Gibraltar: Napoleon has escaped from Elba.

whether or not you agree with Peterson's assessments, they give an invaluable insight into the developing male mind.
they say that to someone with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail, and maybe Dr. Peterson uses pschology the same way.
But...maybe not.
Peterson fans will love it, and Peterson critics will learn what they are actually fighting against rather than the straw men they so often try to knock down.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

better than Ready Player One
Revisado: 02-21-18
Cline did a much better job with this take on joining pop culture with a sci-fi setting.
I kept a running count, and I only groaned out loud 13 times during the course of the story. RPO was near-constant.
Cline has some good ideas, but he really needs an editor.
Wheaton's narration was passable; much less a distraction than in RPO.
