High hopes bored to death
Revisado: 04-18-25
This seemed like a promising premise, but there are any number of plot holes or improbable developments, not to mention writing that is… uncompelling. I’m wondering if this was self published originally. I might actually look at the next book in the series. Maybe this was just the set up, but I found it very difficult to get through.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Beautiful on so many levels
Revisado: 04-10-25
This author…left me speechless. Funny, tragic, distantly historical and yet horrifyingly relevant to today, the story of this small town in Pennsylvania in the 20s 30s and going forward was utterly compelling. Made me laugh, made me cry. Will be looking for more from this author.

Michael Palin brings the fascinating story of the Erebus and its occupants to life, from its construction as a bomb vessel in 1826 through the flagship years of James Clark Ross’s Antarctic expedition and finally to Sir John Franklin’s quest for the holy grail of navigation - a route through the Northwest Passage, where the ship disappeared into the depths of the sea for more than 150 years. It was rediscovered under the arctic waters in 2014.

This is not the kind of thing I ordinarily take interest in, but this was just very compelling. It didn’t hurt that Michael Palin is a terrific narrator.

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Another terrific entry and a really great series
Revisado: 02-26-25
The dialogue, descriptions, and above all the attitude of the author are so very entertaining, even at their darkest. I am enjoying this series so much that I’m reluctant to watch the TV series based on it because even though I love Gary Oldman, it’s hard to imagine Anything on television could possibly capture the wonderful dark and hilarious chaos of the books.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

Wonderful writing of a unique, contemporary spy story
Revisado: 02-22-25
I’m so happy to have discovered this writer and this series! These characters are one of them flawed and eccentric and so wonderfully described with humor, sympathy, and brutal honesty. The plots are occasionally a bit on the violent side, but I don’t seem to mind. My only issue is with the editing. Often times the scene will shift from one character or place to another and whoever edited this has left virtually no space, no airspace, in between. So when you’re listening, it can become confusing. Other than that, these are a complete delight.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Unusual and stylish contemporary spy, drama
Revisado: 02-13-25
This is so beautifully written, you want to slow down and savir some of the phrases, many of which are subtly ironic and humorous. There’s a television show based on this, which I guess I should take a look at, but the books are wonderful, if this first one is anything to go by. One small issue: there’s a lot of jargon here and the narrator makes almost no effort to differentiate between voices. These two factors make it a little difficult to follow at times, although I also blame my occasional confusion and need to go back on the fact that, although I believe I am reasonably well-read, I’m not British and the language is very specific to the UK. Looking forward to the next one.

Freshly graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design, Veridian Sterling is ready to hang her work in any of the countless New York galleries that are sure to give her a show. The problem is only one will, and they’re not interested in her art so much as her personal assistant skills. No glitz, no glam, and definitely none of the money she needs to help her struggling mother finally realize her dream of starting her own business after having sacrificed everything for Veri to go to art school.

Great start but needs an editor
Revisado: 12-09-24
This book was so entertaining in the beginning, apparently knowledgeable, quirky, imperfect characters, a bit of mystery, all very promising. About halfway through there were gaps in the story and major gaps in the logical processes of the heroine. She became incredibly stupid. I mean, there were questions she should’ve asked, and didn’t, that were so completely obvious. It was quite exasperating. Nevertheless, it was pretty fun, and I will most likely look for the second book in the series, assuming there is one.
Very strong narration, although mispronouncing the word “provenance” over and over. Kind of a problem in a book about art.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Gripping tale told with disregard to geography
Revisado: 11-13-24
You know, Thomas Perry is really a very good writer of thrillers, meticulous research in some areas, most areas, involving characters and situations that keep you moving forward. But I am done with him. I don’t know who does his research or edits these things, but it’s absolutely absurd that he could write a scenario where a bus travels from Seattle over the Canadian border to British Columbia, the passengers get off, and our hero and his woman friend take a cab to the Empress hotel in Victoria. Victoria is an island. There is no way to get there by cab from the mainland. This is not the first egregious geographical error that I’ve encountered in his books - like 4 AM flights scheduled from an Utah backwater that doesn’t even have a commercial airport. I get it, it’s all about suspense and the story, but some things become too irritating for a cranky, former travel agent to ignore.

Another harrowing, Jane Whitefield story
Revisado: 10-28-24
These novels are obviously well research with respect to the weaponry, the violence, the crime. But I think I’m done with them. I’m so tired of the sloppiness in the geography, as if Travelocity and Expedia do not exist, the author has people on nonstop flights to places where there are none, and flights in the middle of the night where there are none, and time zones that seem to disappear. I know it’s petty of me but honestly, it takes so little to research these things nowadays. I need some time to forget and then I’ll probably pick up the next one.

Revisado: 10-12-24
I thought I knew something about Maine, but this was a revelation. Well written, in concise no nonsense language that mirrors the character of the people described. Quirky, sometimes funny, wonderfully narrated by Graham Rowat, the themes of this brand of justice will bear pondering for some time. Looking forward to the next entry in the series, if that’s what it is!
