Felicity Philips is a wedding planner who is in her 50's and whose life is as plain and normal as possible, with the possible exception of her being rather ambitious. All of sudden she decides to investigate a murder. Now Felicity is breaking the law right and left, stealing things, breaking and entering, and other unlawful mischief. She goes against everyone's advice, including her own, to put herself in harm's way. I found it so unlikely that an ambitious wedding planner with a reputation to uphold would get involved in the situations described in the book that I couldn't even finish the story - a rarity for me. The best part of the book was "Adventure Dog." I love mysteries, and I especially love mysteries that involve dogs, and so I'm sorry to give this such a low rating. Like a Visit With Old Friends

I've listened to each of the previous books in this series and love that there's a book number 4. I never want this series to end because each book is like catching up with old friends, the kind of friends where you can cozy up to the fire, kick off your shoes, and help yourself to whatever's in the kitchen. The kind of friends who are trustworthy and comfortable to be with and the hours fly by as you catch up on their lives.

Nick and Lesley have finished the renovations on their house in rural west Ireland, but as is always the case in life, there are more challenges and joys in store for them. Lesley's mom comes to live with Nick and Lesley as her Alzheimer's becomes more advanced, and Nick and Lesley do everything within their power to make her life as comfortable and meaningful as possible. They are pleasantly surprised by the services available to them to assist in Muriel's care once they move her from England to Ireland. The sadness of what's happening with Muriel is offset against the joy of becoming grandparents.

In between, there are stories of gardening, cats, the dog who chose where he wanted to live, the other dogs, walks in the woods, and Nick's near escape.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this book, and the others in the series if you haven't read or listened to them yet. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The Author's Story

This book tells the author's story of dealing with insomnia for twenty years. Along the way he introduces pieces of sleep knowledge and, at the very end of the book, introduces the tenets of CBT-I. This book wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be a book about CBT-I with the author's story for illustration, but instead it was a book about the author's story with a smattering of CBT-I thrown in. The author repeats multiple times the things he did wrong for 20 years in trying to deal with his insomnia. Unfortunately, he doesn't stress the right things to do - the CBT-I interventions and tenets - that finally helped his insomnia. As we all know, things that are repeated more are the things that stick better. I wish the author had spent more time on what to do, and less time on what not to do. Ways To Decouple Hours Spent from Income Earned

Say you go to work at McDonald's. For every hour you spend working, you get a certain amount of money. Your hours spent and the money you receive are tightly linked. This book discusses options that change that connection - that separate the hours worked from the income received - but there are no shortcuts. You either need a lot of money upfront, such as for investing in real estate or stocks, or a lot of time upfront, such as is required for writing a book or creating an online course. While I was aware of most of the ways of making passive income discussed in the book, there were a few new ones.

What I found lacking in this book was a discussion of the downsides of each option. Oh, some downsides might have been mentioned here and there, but overall the author makes his options for passive income sound easy to do for anyone, when in fact if you don't have large amount of money to invest you aren't going to be able to invest in real estate as a passive income strategy. Likewise if you don't have a lot of time, to say nothing of expertise, skill, and talent, you aren't going to be creating a book or online course. Those issues of money, time, and expertise are glossed over, as is the subject of risk, which is a large oversight in my opinion and is what reduced the number of stars I gave. What If You're Not Who You Think You Are?

I was introduced to Ava Richardson through her Alveria Dragon Akademy Untameables series, which I loved. When I heard about this book I jumped at the chance to listen to it and was thrilled that the narrator was the same one. The stories are well written and enjoyable, and Rebekah Nemethy brings the characters and action to life with her voice. Although the story is long, the time just flew by as I became engrossed in the story.

Nova Harris can be abrupt and quick to anger, but she's fiercely loyal to her best friend, Zephyr. When a komodo dragon shows up and starts talking to them while the two girls are away from their mutual foster home, Nova decides to go with him for a chance to find her mother. Zephyr declares, "Where you go, I go" and goes along, too. The komodo dragon turns into a real dragon and takes the girls through a portal from Earth to Ragond. Nova feels a bit guilty about having taken Zephyr away from everything she's ever known, but in truth, Zephyr finds herself in Ragond and is truly happy. Nova, on the other hand, has far more complicated feelings about everything, and she often finds herself in trouble for not knowing the rules of this new place, nor her own history within it.

I look forward to more of the Portal War stories. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Interesting Stories, Poor Narration

I've been interested in all things medical since I was a young child reading the Merck Manual for fun. I enjoyed all the stories in this book: the ones about patient interactions, staff interactions, romantic interactions, and the testing situations. In fact, I enjoyed them so much that I pushed through the poor narration in order to hear more. The narration was halting and stilted, and the narrator was unable to pronounce abdomen correctly, which was a shame as the word came up repeatedly and I found myself talking back to the narrator over and over to say it wasn't pronounced abdonem, but abdomen. He also had trouble with the work permanent and a few others. I have downloaded other books by this author and will listen to them for the interesting stories, but I could definitely wish for a different narrator.

Engaging, But Too Short

I enjoyed both the story and narration, right up until the end. Wait, that was the end? Isn't there more story to listen to? Yes, the end came as a surprise and it's clear the author is trying to get people to read or listen to the next book in the series. Once the story ended, I had to back up and figure out what the climax of the story had been. This mystery is so cozy that the climax was only clear in retrospect; while it was happening it didn't feel like anything special.

Because of the length of the story only a few characters were fully developed and many were only drawn in vague outline, which is one of the reasons the crux of the story - the climax - sort of passed me by without me noticing it as something special. Despite that, the story had an interesting premise and was engaging, and I enjoyed the narration. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Those 30 Hours Went Way Too Fast

Revisado: 05-18-21

The three books together are a long listen - 30 hours - but I found myself seeking out opportunities to listen to the story and the time just flew by.

I can't say enough good things about the narration. Despite the multitude of characters, each one had a distinctive voice and cadence and I was able to tell which character was speaking at all times. With audiobooks, poor narration can doom a story and good narration can make it rich and engaging. This recording is firmly in the second camp.

The story premise is unique, but I won't give it away by telling what it is. The plot was interesting and I found myself rooting for all the right people. The only reason I downgraded the overall story is because the storyline bogs down repeatedly as Laini, the protagonist, and Tyr, a dragon hunter, dwell on their feelings far too frequently and for far too long each time. Don't let that stop you from listening to the story, though. The storyline is well worth the slight annoyance. I'm Hooked and Want More

I loved everything about this book, the setting, the detective, Kallie, the animals, and the plot, not to mention the narration. I was completely hooked from beginning to end and want to read or more likely, listen to, more books in this series.

Kallie, a veterinarian, gets called to help law enforcement because they have a recalcitrant dog on the scene of a case. Kallie uses her animal communication ability to get the dog to not only give up the bone he's protecting, but show her where it came from. Unlike in some stories, Kallie's animal communication skills don't ever become annoying. She claims she learned them in a class and that anyone can do it if they know how. Skepticism of Kallie's abilities is predictable, but people come to believe her as she uses her ability to help law enforcement solve their crime. The author has done a nice job on introducing marketing concepts applicable to Etsy, and really, almost any online marketing. At 3 and half hours this is a fairly short listen - good for people pressed for time who just want to get to the heart of the matter. Personally, I found the narration a little slow, but the upside of that is that it allows time to understand and process what's being said.
