It is the story of Mr. Vane, an orphan and heir to a large house - a house in which he has a vision that leads him through a large old mirror into another world. In chronicling the five trips Mr. Vane makes to this other world, MacDonald hauntingly explores the ultimate mystery of evil.

If you loved Stepenwolf but wished there was more fantasy.
Revisado: 04-17-24
This is by no means a passive read, and it is filled with depth that can’t really be explored in one sitting. This is one of the first novels one could think of as “fantasy” before the genre had an official title, and it does such an amazing job elevating fairy tales, myth, and folklore to high art you’ll be unable to see its influences on the likes of Neil Gaiman, Carl Jung, H.P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King. If you want a book that is less of a journey to a magical land, and acts more as an adventure of the internal universe- complete with fantastic characters from esoteric Christian mythology- do yourself a favor and give Lilith a listen. My only complaint is you can’t just binge this one. Take your time, and your enjoyment will multiply.

Historia
The inhabitants of Lud-in-the-Mist, a city located at the confluence of the rivers Dapple and Dawl, in the fictional state of Dorimare, must contend with the influx of fairy fruit and the effect of the fantastic inhabitants of the bordering land of Faerie, whose very existence they had sought to banish from their rational lives. When the denial proves futile, their mayor, the respectable Nathaniel Chanticleer, finds himself involved reluctantly with the conflict and obliged to change his conventional personal life and disregard the traditions of Lud-in-the-Mist to find a reconciliation.

A fantasy allegory about inevitable, and the specter of change.
Revisado: 04-03-24
This is a really strong story that uses the idea of fairy fruit to represent the encroachment of modernization, new ideas, art, and forms of expression finding their way into a rural European town by illicit means. This is a story that was written in the 1920’s so there isn’t nearly as much characterization, or dialogue as I would have expected from a modern novel, but this kind of narrative form was pretty common when Lud in the Mist was written. For such an interesting premise it’s all too easy to find yourself tuning out the narrator simply because there is so much telling and not nearly enough showing.

Historia
At turns nonchalantly hip and charmingly deranged, Suzuki's singular slant on speculative fiction would be echoed in countless later works, from Margaret Atwood and Harumi Murakami, to Black Mirror and Ex Machina. In these darkly playful and punky stories, the fantastical elements are always earthed by the universal pettiness of strife between the sexes, and the gritty reality of life on the lower rungs, whatever planet that ladder might be on.

Amazing SF From a Giant
Revisado: 06-28-23
If Izumi Suzuki isn’t the mother of the anime aesthetic her work has, without a doubt, nurtured the ideas of all it’s most notable creators. It’s a shame these works have only now been made available in English, but one can hope this is a sign of more to come. I do feel the audiobook should have come with an introduction of some kind to each story, as well as a quick bio about the author as, I can tell from the reviews, many of the people reading this book don’t fully grasp the significance of the work.

Exactly what I have always wanted.
Revisado: 02-23-23
This is the Tau novel I wish GW had released back when they first appeared in 3rd edition. Don’t listen to anyone who says it’s just okay, or somehow a subpar book just because it isn’t filled with the usual Mary Sue marines. You feel a genuine sense of danger even though the characters histories were determined a long time ago in many other snippets of lore. A lot of questions about who the Tau are, and the detailed history of their most famous commander were handled very well and gave this long time fan a lot to chew on. I have to say, as someone who plays them, and have often been frustrated by their rules, this book answered a lot of my burning questions as well. Read it if you want 40k with a change of pace from the usual stuffy marine lore (that all sounds like it walked off the set of masterpiece theatre), or read it if you want some really good science fiction from the alien perspective. Either way you won’t be disappointed.

The Nazi fascination with the occult is legendary, yet today it is often dismissed as Himmler's personal obsession or wildly overstated for its novelty. Preposterous though it was, however, supernatural thinking was inextricable from the Nazi project. The regime enlisted astrology and the paranormal, paganism, Indo-Aryan mythology, witchcraft, miracle weapons, and the lost kingdom of Atlantis in reimagining German politics and society and recasting German science and religion.

A Profound Insight Into a Sadly Relevent Topic
Revisado: 05-27-21
This book presents the origins to much of the western world's modern, ignorant, ideologicla racism, and paranoia over metaphysicl/existential dilemmas concerning race. It's essential to understanding the development of bigoted pseudoscience over the course of generations, and gives a detailed account of how closely linked the spiritual revival was to white supremacy. The best part is this is the first author I have encountered willing to call the Nazi myth out for the fraud that it is. There are no pacts with demons here, or UFO's, but you will find out why some of Germany's worst blunders stem from the ridiculous mystical strategies that doomed the third rich before the war even began. All of the research is thorough, and free of a lot of the new age dramatics one normally finds in books about the occult fascination of the Nazi's.
