A picturesque Yorkshire village is dressed in its finest for the upcoming Noel. But one of its residents will not be celebrating this holiday. Chief Inspector Alan Banks knows that secrecy can sometimes prove fatal---and secrets were the driving force behind Caroline Hartley's life...and death. A product of their times, these books are hard to stomach through today’s lens. Very sexist.

Don’t bother. The protagonist has no redeeming qualities.
Revisado: 10-14-24
I don’t know what the author is trying to achieve. This is a whiny, pity-party mess. DS Cody is the most selfish character. Redemption is not possible.

I question the police procedures in this series. Cold cases “solved” with no solid evidence. Also, the women in this series are caricatures. Very disappointing. I had hoped for better.

Historia
On a bitterly cold winter's night, Liverpool is left stunned by a brutal murder in the grounds of the city's Anglican Cathedral. A killer is on the loose, driven by a chilling rage. Put on the case, DS Nathan Cody is quickly stumped. Wherever he digs, the victim seems to be almost angelic - no one has a bad word to say, let alone a motive for such a violent murder. And Cody has other things on his mind, too.

Historia
Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is the last detective: a genuine gumshoe, committed to door-stopping and deduction rather than fancy computer gadgetry. So when the naked body of a woman is found floating in the weeds in a lake near Bath with no one willing to identify her, no marks, and no murder weapon, his sleuthing abilities are tested to the limit.

Finishing this book requires the patience of a saint - which I, apparently, do not have. It was long and meandering. I did not like any of the characters enough to see it through to the end. I will not continue the series.

Historia
From the moment Karen Stannard comes striding in the door, Arnold Landon knows his workplace will never be the same. Now, he is saddled with a project he never wanted: the Ridgeway Viking Trust. Its shady leaders tell him there’s treasure buried in the rolling Northumberland Hills—they just need one more payout to reach it. But is there more to the Trust than meets the eye? Muck-raking journalist Alan Crickley seems to think so. He’s got the scent of corruption and he’s on the trail... Until the day he drives his car into a ditch, a stone’s throw from the dig.

Ten books in and no growth or personal development. Also, the narrator does not have enough range. Too many characters sound the same. But useful for insomnia.

Disappointing. Unlikeable, self-centered protagonist.
Revisado: 03-18-24
I found myself wishing someone, anyone, would put Tom Mariner (and us) out of his misery. The constant wallowing and revisiting of well trod ground were too much. After skipping entire chapters, this is as far as I can go with this series.

Historia
A young woman's body is discovered on a deserted footpath. It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim's mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories, involving violence and intimidation. There's an obvious suspect, but Detective Allen isn't convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for warped revenge?

One night. Two shootings. Two victims. When DI Bliss arrives at the scene of the second murder, he recognises the same three-shot pattern as the first. But there is one major difference: the second victim has been decapitated, the head nowhere to be found. When a second headless corpse is discovered the following day, Bliss and his team realise the killer is on a spree - and he’s not done yet. There are four more headless victims, and the police believe they know why.

Unlikeable protagonist. Women in the series not well written.
Revisado: 11-10-23
I struggled with this series and have finally reached the point of no return. I think we are supposed to like DI Bliss, or at least sympathize with him, but I simply hate the character. And, the women in this series are just canon fodder. I couldn’t bring myself to finish either this book or the previous one. Therefore, this is where I get off.
