Historia
No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio, or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce. The Way Home is a modern-day Walden - an honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life lived in nature without modern technology. Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Man, explores the hard-won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the stream, foraging, and fishing.

A great journey into a real life experience. Not just words, Mark Boyle is living what he tells. Reading it is like entering his place and living with him. I felt it under my skin.

Since Margarita’s father is Mexican American, the McCoys' record label wants to use her to show that they aren’t as whitewashed as the article says.

The ancient world has cast a long shadow, influencing our customs and religious beliefs, our laws, and the form of our governments. It has taught us when and how we make war or pursue peace. It has shaped the buildings we live and work in and the art we hang on our walls. It has given us the calendar that organizes our year and has left its mark on the games we play.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

A good start but then... not so good
Revisado: 11-17-20
I enjoyed the first part of the book. I was especially amazed by the variety of characters, each of one well drafted. The plot was intriguing enough, though never complicated and the setting almost static. Then, in the second half, everything ruined as a crumbling mountain falling into the sea. The plot became more and more predictable. The way the characters acted became repetitive. Imagination was very limited and the effort to introduce humorous quips here and there was really unsuccessful. I struggled to finish it. The performance was fine all through it.

Historia
Mesopotamia is the ancient name for the region that is now Iraq, a remarkably advanced civilization that flourished for two-thirds of the time that civilization has existed on Earth. Mesopotamians mastered irrigation agriculture; built the first complex urban societies; developed writing, literature, and law; and united vast regions through warfare and diplomacy. While civilizations like Greece and Rome have an unbroken tradition of written histories, the rich history of Mesopotamia has only been recently rediscovered, thanks to the decipherment of Mesopotamia's cuneiform writing less than 200 years ago.

Great! It is able to bring those ancient peoples to life again. Considering them as our ancestors, the narrative can be introspective even (though with the benefit of hindsight).

Historia
Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

A message to be considered
Revisado: 06-07-18
This book made me think and reconsider behaviours and prejudice, what is the prize of a victory and what is lost on the ground. The narrative and performance are good and riveting. The facts are presented as crude as they can be from the viewpoint of the losers on the battlefield. Perhaps, values that are weak today were more defended in other cultures, such as that one of Native Americans. And this may be why we are now struggling to do better in such fields, but with little success. Nature, respect, integration, and being happy with what is available seem to much of a challenge today. I like to think that the legacy of these proud people is the teaching that there is another way to deal with things we are not as good at.
