Historia
Widely known today as the "Angel of the Battlefield", Clara Barton's personal life has always been shrouded in mystery. In Clara Barton, Professional Angel, Elizabeth Brown Pryor presents a biography of Barton that strips away the heroic exterior and reveals a complex and often trying woman. Based on the papers Clara Barton carefully saved over her lifetime, this biography is the first one to draw on these recorded thoughts. Not always altruistic, her accomplishments were nonetheless extraordinary.

The Narrator Makes This Book!
Revisado: 06-11-24
This is a book that simply couldn’t have been narrated by a man. Had it been narrated by most other women, I’d likely have simply rated this as “good.” However, Ms. Horn provides us the full measure of this flawed but fabulous heroine of U.S. and world history. We can experience both Barton’s greatness and her carelessness without allowing that to detract from our love of her legacy. I look forward to future books being narrated by Ms. Horne!

Bad Editing
Revisado: 05-26-24
Ok, great book by Crichton, great reading by Lloyd. Horrible editing by Random House Audio! The stupidly long breaks between sections caused me to check my phone for loss of connection, crashed app, etc. on numerous occasions.
I am glad I listened to this to get Crichton’s words. As much as I love the movie, there are many differences, and now I know what they are.

Historia
For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams.

Where has this gem been all of my life?!
Revisado: 12-14-23
How did it take me 53 years to find this gem? As a fan of Lewis Carroll, Frank Baum, Maurice Sendak, Roald Dahl (and probably even Piers Anthony), this title has somehow escaped me until now!
Juster’s wordplay is juvenile and genius at the same time!
If you like Dwight Schrute, or if you dislike him, it won’t matter either way, because Rainn Wilson isn’t channeling him here. His voice is perfect for this amazing story. I can only imagine the laughing and tongue twisting he had to go through to get this one recorded!
Just as it feels like Juster drew inspiration from Lewis’s Narnia, I suspect this must have influenced the creation of so many other iconic children’s tales, such as “The Magic Schoolbus.”
Now to find the movie adaptation!

Great listen, the editing could be better.
Revisado: 10-11-23
Harrison did a great job narrating this one. Very enjoyable.
My only complaint is the poor sound editing. Multiple bad cuts and repeated words in the recording. One of which was fairly long.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Stick to Writing them Jim!
Revisado: 10-01-23
Another excellent story, but I think Jim should stick with the typewriter and leave the microphone to James!
At least now I know that Jim thinks that Harry sounds like John Wayne.
Oh, I will say, Jim makes Mab sound scarier than James does!

In this dark and gritty collection - featuring short stories from Jim Butcher, Seanan McGuire, Kevin J. Anderson, and Rob Thurman - nothing is as simple as black and white, light and dark, good and evil.... Unfortunately, that's exactly what makes it so easy to cross the line.

Caveat Emptor! Not a Dresden Anthology!
Revisado: 06-20-22
When Audible numbers this as book 14.5 in the Dresden Files, I expect it to be a bunch of Dresden stories, or an anthology of stories from other authors about characters in the Dresden Universe. That is absolutely NOT what this is.
This is more like a misrepresented advertisement for Audible to try and introduce listeners to other authors that write similar types of books. There is only, I believe, one story in this anthology that resides in Dresden's universe. Very disappointing.

A very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 11-29-18
A quite enjoyable listen. A fun twist to the Lovecraftian mythology.
One thought though. When writing about the weird and wonderful, you’re expecting a lot of willing suspension from your audience, especially when describing the indescribable. With that in mind, it would behoove the author to get the details of reality correct. Glocks don’t have a safety.

Not a bad first try
Revisado: 11-21-18
An interesting listen, and an ambitious effort.
While listening, I couldn’t help but hear many lines parroted, almost verbatim, from some of my other favorite works though. It became distracting to have it happen so often.
I can’t decide if Theta is more akin to Conan, Gilgamesh, or Elric. Perhaps even Fafhrd?
The writing style, particularly the Forward, was Lovecraftian in its effort to provide a real fictional reality behind the story. I was glad to not have one of the references by the Mad Arab Alhazred!
A lot of mythology mixing here! Some will be offended by it, once they figure out what the author is doing, who Theta is, and the context of his background.
I give the story 3 stars. I’ll try book 4.

Better Editing Would Help
Revisado: 05-09-18
Great story, and the narrator brings it to life, but the editing is atrocious!
Sentences repeated numerous times simply shouldn’t happen in a professional production like this. Pay more attention when splicing the audio together.
