Holy cow!
Revisado: 02-05-25
What a mesmerizing novel. Loretta is a sweet, kind woman whom I cheered for from start to finish. Her gifts are magical and made her dangerous. The story and characters are beautifully crafted. The voice of the narrator is also beautiful. I cheered, booed and became angry at a few characters and wanted death to visit them in horrific ways. LOL! If anyone is looking to do a gripping mini-series, look no further.

Really enjoyed this novel. When it came to the actual “interview”, really wished Joe’s questions were more intense and he had asked more about the things he had been seeing since childhood and the voices. Still a solid book.

Nick’s humanly hubris
Revisado: 01-17-25
A brilliant follow up to his first amazing book. I was taken aback by Nick’s brazenness and hubris, exhibited more the second time around. Then, towards the ending, it dawned on me — Nick was being human. What I took for disrespect and flippant behavior was simple human behavior, our nasty flaws and all. The irony of both the second and first book is that in human life, Nick ended his. In Black Farm life, he craves and fights to get back his human life. He had “life” in each realm, but it’s his human life he now holds sacred.

Disturbing
Revisado: 01-05-25
Sadly, millions of humans have experienced the loss of a some one who has taken their lives. Survivors are left wondering “why” and sleuthing for years of what signs we missed. The Black Farm is a take on suicide that I never considered as a non-Catholic - the punishment. The Black Farm is a horrifying, abysmal and frightening view on what happens to the “suicidal’s” that I couldn’t stop listening to! Riveting and painful. Hopeful and nasty. Disgusting and promising. A warning for anyone who has contemplated or experienced this loss in their lives: this is fiction but it left me wondering: what if? God save us all.

Way too descriptive in many passages. As a reader, I enjoy smaller descriptions of people, places, things, allowing my imagination to do the rest.

In the still-segregated town of West Mills, North Carolina, in 1976, Marian, Marva, and Lazarus Harmon—three enigmatic siblings—are found shot to death in their home. The people of West Mills— on both sides of the canal that serves as the town’s color line—are in a frenzy of finger-pointing, gossip, and wonder. What an enjoyable saga of families, secrets, murder, power and privilege. Anyone listening, no matter the ethnicity, can see themselves, friends or family members in this tale. Beautifully read, the story unwinds in measures, not allowing any of us to yell, “I knew it!” How could we know when the characters are so complex and real? A truly great book!

Not what I expected…in a bad way
Revisado: 04-16-24
The narrator was superb! The story was mediocre. Too many implausibilities for my comfort. Mack was one of the best characters, yet, largely ignored. Lucy and Reed, the main characters, were well developed but Lucy became annoying and too suspicious of the wrong people. And don’t get me started with the overuse of similes! This could have been a great novel. It had it all: interesting characters, isolation, mistrust, secrets and lies but it went off kilter trying to weave in modern day issues with the cottage’s history of being a typhoid hospital.

The ease of the flow of the storyline, characters and events.
Revisado: 02-21-24
Wasn’t sure if this would be of interest to me. I was intrigued after 20 minutes and hooked after the end of chapter one. The story is intense and captivating. You feel for the characters; even the Antennae’s. The epilogue was mind blowing (and shameful, TBH).
The narration was superb. I’m a freak for tone and the voice actor was on point. Overall, a fantastic listen!
