Historia
After almost 20 years of caring for elderly parents - first for their senile father and then for their cantankerous 93-year-old mother - author Plum Johnson and her three younger brothers have finally fallen to their middle-aged knees with conflicted feelings of grief and relief. Now they must empty and sell the beloved family home, 23 rooms bulging with history, antiques, and oxygen tanks. Plum thought, How tough will that be? I know how to buy garbage bags. But the task turns out to be much harder and more rewarding than she ever imagined.

Deep self-knowledge through bittersweet reflection
Revisado: 03-19-25
Being related (same great-grandparents?) and acquainted with the author's brother made this story more personal than it otherwise might have been. I saw some similarities in behavior and attitudes that fascinated me.
The author's descriptions of the house, the lake, and the town urge me to visit -- or at least to study photos of them. What a wonderful environment to grow up in.
Most importantly, the growth of the author's awareness of the cycle of life, and the concomitant growth of her appreciation for her parents. Parent-child relationships can be tremendously complex. The author's vulnerable and candid reflections are inspiring and encouraging.
Thank you, Plum, for sharing your life and your love of family with me.

Historia
Alan Watts draws on the wisdom of Eastern philosophy and religion in this timeless and classic guide to living a more fulfilling life. His central insight is more relevant now than ever: when we spend all of our time worrying about the future and lamenting the past, we are unable to enjoy the present moment—the only one we are actually able to inhabit.

Being as a child
Revisado: 02-27-25
Having read "The Book" decades ago, I find that Watts' explanations expand my thinking. I appreciate how he does that.
It is ironic, then, that his message points to the idea that thinking gets in the way of experiencing life. And experiencing life, here and now, is what it's all about. Past and future get in the way.
The most profound insights for me are found in the last 30 minutes. But you must follow his argument laid out throughout the book to have the last 30 minutes make sense.
Experience the book.
Take what you will.
Enjoy today.

Fascinating Story
Revisado: 11-26-24
Andy Andrews did it again. I know no other author who is able to weave such heart-warming, meaningful, and touching stories from truth and, let's say, "creative thinking."
Having grown up in Norfolk and lived along the Chesapeake Bay, I've known that German U-boats preyed on Allied shipping in our waters.
Could this story be historically accurate?
Sure. Why not?
True?
Absolutely. Human nature is what it is. And that's what this story is about.
Enjoy it. Learn from it. Make her happy to have it told.

Revisado: 09-06-24
The author is a scholar (like Owl), for he knows much philosophy.
He is very clever (like Rabbit), for he weaves philosophy into the Pooh stories in a clever way.
But like Pooh, he sees what they don't.

Expansive Explanation of Complex Adaptive Systems Known as Creation
Revisado: 01-05-24
This book takes the reader on a journey through time and through levels of life by employing the components of complex adaptive systems, from "Diversity Generators" to "Resource Shifters".
Simultaneously erudite and colloquial, the tone and word choice make difficult concepts understandable. Complexity becomes understandable (but not simple) in the pen of the author. This book is a remarkable achievement.
To truly master the subject, you would need to read the book several times, but one reading opens a new world to the reader.

Bach's breakout book
Revisado: 11-09-23
Bach created a small masterpiece with JLS. I have been moved by many of his books over the years. His insights into reality and his way of challenging conventional religious thought is fun to read.
The narrator portrayed each character with unerring nuance, helping to guide the reader in understanding the emotions (frustration, impatience, awe, disdain, and love) and attitudes (ambition, pride, striving, graciousness, and forgiveness) of the characters which stand in for mankind.
This story is an outstanding allegory for the paradoxical struggle of mankind's search for enlightenment and its self-destructive tendency to distort the truth.
Bach's subsequent books (Illusions, The Bridge Across Forever, One, etc.) expand the themes found in JLS. If you like JLS, try the others, as well.

The revered author’s definitive collection of short fiction, which explores enduring spiritual and science fiction themes such as space, time, reality, fantasy, God, and the fate of humankind. As powerful, inventive, and profound as his theological and philosophical works, The Dark Tower reveals another side of Lewis’s creative mind and his longtime fascination with reality and spirituality. It is ideal listening for fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, Lewis’s longtime friend and colleague.

Tantalizing insights into Lewis' mind
Revisado: 11-09-23
Still early in my reading of Lewis' many works, I cannot compare this collection of unfinished works with his science fiction stories.
The editor did a fine job of giving context to the stories and insights into Lewis' thinking.
The narrator was excellent -- clear and vibrant.

Historia
In the form of warm, relaxed letters to a close friend, C. S. Lewis meditates on many puzzling questions concerning the intimate dialogue between man and God. He considers practical and metaphysical aspects of prayer, such as when we pray and where. He questions why we seek to inform God in our prayers if he is omniscient, whether there is an ideal form of prayer, and which of our many selves we show to God while praying.
