incredible feeling capturing our time
Revisado: 10-16-24
Love, love, love! Extensive knowledge of our contemporary world and science combined with his own personal experience gives a great example of the complexity of human emotion. Both hope and sadness in his voice as he explains with exhilarating details a snapshot of our history. Intermingling gives us hope in the big picture while acknowledging the often unique experiences each of us might have. I found the stories filled me up with courage. He is open about mental health struggles in a way that is approachable and not distracting, normalizing things we all feel and acknowledging its a struggle. Thanks John for sharing this book, it sure did make a difference to me!

Historia
Many childhood summers, Mark Woods piled into a station wagon with his parents and two sisters and headed to America's national parks. Mark's most vivid childhood memories are set against a backdrop of mountains, woods, and fireflies in places like Redwood, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon national parks. On the eve of turning 50, and a little burned out, Mark decided to reconnect with the great outdoors. He'd spend a year visiting the national parks.

great narrator, lackluster story, wonderful themes
Revisado: 08-21-18
The topics are wonderful, national parks, conservation arguments were most interesting. The story felt slightly disjointed at times with the author taking time to set up an uncompelling points. Sometimes overly sentimental. Wished I came away with more knowledge about national parks. The details and history were inspiring.

Spectacular writing describing a haunting tale
Revisado: 05-29-18
Easy read with amazing eloquent prose. Topics are DEEP: feminism, misogyny, religious fanaticism, identity, and the importance of a healthy society and many more. Remarkably easy to understand given the topics and themes, evokes thought and discussion because main character is so aware of her own transformation. Want to read again!
