Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Excellent Storytelling
Revisado: 04-23-22
After a while, Dick Hill’s accents for each character start blending together, but the storyline, then tension, the action scenes, the detective work — it all works so well together.

Historia
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

Informative but Dull
Revisado: 04-12-22
I really enjoy most of Thomas Sowell’s work. His style of writing is generally engaging and informative. I’ve had this book on my To-Read list for a while, but maybe the narrator just wasn’t cutting it for me. He was different than the narrator from the other Sowell audiobooks I’ve read and enjoyed. Michael Edwards seemed bored as the narrator even though the information was interesting to me.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Familiar Territory
Revisado: 04-03-22
This story felt like a cousin to Stephen King’s IT. Less “coming-of-age” and more “detective noir” — which I enjoyed. Per usual, King explores many avenues and misdirections. He keeps you guessing and once it’s solved it just becomes the beginning of his horror/thriller.
I especially enjoyed Will Patton’s performance.

Funny and Zany
Revisado: 03-22-22
The performances were just right, the storyline doesn’t need to be tight but that’s part of the fun, and the crazy characters were a hoot. The medium of a podcast series feels the biggest misfit.

Historia
Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

Exactly What I Expected…and A Little More
Revisado: 03-17-22
Any fan of Bob Odenkirks writing or acting will appreciate the backstories and insights he provides from throughout his career. This not familiar with his work but who love comedy, will definitely get a kick out of this memoir and even more so a deep dive on some of his work.
I can tell that Odenkirk actually wrote this because his voice, although quite literal for me in the sense that I listened to the audiobook, comes through clearly and affected as only he can.
My only issue is a point made at the very end that I sensed peppered throughout, auspiciously driven by his wife perhaps and that is a sense to address a modern “wokeness” lens to past concerns in an effort, perhaps, to avoid cancel culture. Areas where he or his project fell short by today’s standards, or to hedge a topic that his fellow liberals might find questionable. These pepperonis stood out to me as I listened and then it became obvious at the end why it was peppered in.
It’s a minor sticking point as it felt like an attempt to control things before the book and it’s content got out to all the world.
So aside from that — and it’s really not that big a deal, I just felt it unnecessary for the most part — the book was quite enjoyable and I even intend to pick up a physical copy as I’ve been a huge fan of Mr. Odenkirk for nearly two decades and look forward to his future projects.

Satisfied a Baseball Craving During the 2022 Lockout
Revisado: 03-09-22
Some stories were better than others and some are just…odd. Several start quite promising and then fizzle out a little bit. Due to the 2022 MLB lockout, I decided to enjoy some baseball books to get my fix and this hit that, but there’s definitely better out there.

Historia
In Robert E. Lee, the award-winning historian Allen Guelzo has written the definitive biography of the general, following him from his refined upbringing in Virginia high society, to his long career in the U.S. Army, his agonized decision to side with Virginia when it seceded from the Union, and his leadership during the Civil War. Above all, Guelzo captures Robert E. Lee in all his complexity--his hypocrisy and courage, his outward calm and inner turmoil, his honor and his disloyalty.

The fair and even writing is both compelling and enlightening as some of my preconceived notions were either proven true or false. I now have a fuller picture of this complicated figure in our history. I also want to state how exceptional Jason Culp was as the narrator — well done!

With the world slowly sliding into war, it is crucial that enemies of the Reich flee Europe at once. But so many routes are closed, and so much money is needed. Revisado: 12-11-21
Remarque has a talent for conveying a wide breadth of emotions and describing incredible scenes. I found this particular story thrilling and moving because of the troubles with war and fear and love and loss and hope and every human emotion. War is hell.
Kirby Heyborne gives an incredible performance in this reading, making the characters believable and lively.

Different Than I Remember
Revisado: 12-02-21
I remember reading this in elementary school, at least part 1, which is fairly common it seems. I understand why it was so popular at the time it was written as I’m sure the language and satire was easier to follow and appeal to, but I felt many times that I was lost or disinterested. Other times I was guffawing because of Pierce’s reading. This book probably requires a class or group to discuss as I ended up just reading online about what some of the absurd things meant or satirized.

Historia
James “Cool Papa” Bell (1903-1991) was a legend in Black baseball, a lightning-fast switch hitter elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Bell’s speed was extraordinary; as Satchel Paige famously quipped, he was so fast he could flip a light switch and be in bed before the room got dark. In The Bona Fide Legend of Cool Papa Bell, experienced baseball writer and historian Lonnie Wheeler recounts the life of this extraordinary player, a key member of some of the greatest Negro League teams in history.

Worth Remembering
Revisado: 11-16-21
James “Cool Papa” Bell’s story is amazing. I wish I could’ve watched him play, to watch him race around the bases. There are so few with the speed and intuition to run the bases like Cool Papa. I was especially moved by his humility and willingness to pass on the baton so that future players might receive the chance he never got, but so rightfully deserved.
My only issues with the book were David Sadzin’s reading (mostly fine, though the directing/editing might’ve made his pacing off a bit at times), and it felt like there was more to be told about Cool Papa. I’m sure it’s mostly due to a lack of available information, but it felt like we just plumbed the surface a bit a times.
