Good story, dreadful translation
Revisado: 06-06-23
Could have been great, but either the translation is machine made or the translator does not speak English. Almost relentlessly "wonder" is used instead of "ask", et al. There are less repetitive but obvious and annoying mistranslations that just make it hard to follow.
The narration is good, but for me, the whining tone, plus the errors on the text and quick changes of characters/time makes the listening exhaustive.

Historia
In the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo an unusual statue of a Japanese mythic beast—a kirin—stands guard over the district from the classic Nihonbashi bridge. In the evening, a man who appears to be very drunk staggers onto the bridge and collapses right under the statue of the winged beast. The patrolman who sees this scene unfold, goes to rouse the man, only to discover that the man was not passed out, he was dead; that he was not drunk, he was stabbed in the chest.

Interesting book, terrible narration
Revisado: 01-12-23
The performance for the narrator has an unnatural, annoying and hard to follow intonation, like a bad auto generated robotic voice.
The dialogue is read properly so this was on purpose, not the fault of the voice actor. It ruins the book, it took me forever to finish though I love Higashino. The story, as usual is very well developed, but I'd rather recommend the printed/digital book.

It's early summer in Stockholm. Agneta and Stellan Broman have just waved off their daughters and grandchildren when the landline phone rings. The caller says just one word: "Geiger." Agneta hangs up, finds her old pistol, kills her husband of 50 years, and then disappears from their home without a trace.

Great book, unexpected twists.
Revisado: 07-01-22
A surprisingly engaging book, with plenty of unexpected twists and excellently written.
Ok, maybe I didn't love the main character. At times I wonder if it was necessary to go to such lengths to highlight her tragic flaws. But I have to admit that yes, it makes perfect sense.
Unlike other listeners I didn't find the book too long or felt it heavy on historical snippets. We are given relevant background to the story/characters, not a history class. If anything I could live without less examples on how S is so sanctimonious.
The narration was very good, except for the pronunciation of foreign names.

Good writing, OK story
Revisado: 06-10-22
The writing is good, it makes the story interesting. However the story and characters are not that great. I know it's a short story and a difficult genre.
But it just doesn't make me to wonder or care don't for any character, in the end they're forgettable and replaceble. But I'd give it a try for a full novel with proper character development.

Total let down. It offers no more info than a wiki, it's just shallow promotion without a real purpose.
It gives the same 101 info that a simple search will give and sprinkles a couple basic exercises.

A breath of fresh air
Revisado: 01-12-22
Unlike most "Nordic noir" books this one is not marked by a hero with a superior moral compass, no rosy outcomes or better than life characters. On the one hand there's no gore, on the other it leaves a lingering feeling of bleakness and injustice since as it succeeds in portraying real life.
Nevertheless it's a great book, very different to the rest.

She and her maid are traveling in an enclosed wagon, while her husband, his grooms, and a squire are mounted. When the party arrives at Bampton Castle neither the lady nor her maid are within the enclosed wagon: They have simply vanished. Entertaining light reading
Revisado: 07-21-21
I really liked the book series; it's well written with amenable characters, a nice historical setting and is perfect for distraction.
It doesn't have great character development, turns or an amazing plot. But there's nothing wrong with that,
it does serve its purpose.

Historia
On a cold and rainy Stockholm night, nine bus riders are gunned down by an unknown assassin. The press, anxious for an explanation for the seemingly random crime, quickly dubs him a madman. But Superintendent Martin Beck of the Stockholm Homicide Squad suspects otherwise. This apparently motiveless killer has managed to target one of Beck's best detectives - and he, surely, would not have been riding that lethal bus without a reason.

Good book, awful narrator
Revisado: 05-12-21
I really wanted to like it, but it's impossible. No idea of what the narrator was trying to do, slurring word endings an mispronouncing in a monotonous annoying voice. Skip it and read the book.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Interesting, but anti-climatic end
Revisado: 02-04-20
Overall this was a good find, after a bit I was hooked with the story and wondering if this was something else that was overlooked in the case. The folklore is very interesting however the story does not flow naturally throughout the book, it doesn't feel like this is because the author means to leave you wondering about things, rather it feels like an unpolished story. I guess this adds some sense of authenticity to the story, however the end was pretty anti-climatic IMO. Overall its an interesting listen, particularly because you get an honest opinion about what's life like for an Alaskan.

Manabu Yukawa, the physicist known as "Detective Galileo," has traveled to Hariguara, a once-popular summer resort town that has fallen on hard times. He is there to speak at a conference on a planned underwater mining operation, which has sharply divided the town. One faction is against the proposed operation, concerned about the environmental impact on the area, known for its pristine waters. The other faction, seeing no future in the town as it is, believes its only hope lies in the development project.

Loved the twists
Revisado: 11-28-17
Something that I love from Higashino is that the plot intelligent and not completely predictable as in all the Galileo series. The strength of this detective story is the constant twists and the down to earth setting that makes you focus on the how's rather than on the crime itself.
If you are not familiar with the author you will find out that he does not need to fill the story with unnecessary gore and violence in order to make a compelling and interesting story. It's a whodunit mystery where you are presented with the stories of all actors; characters that can be real -not archetypes- and whose lives are affected by a murder You won't find action or crazy sociopaths here, instead you get a rather witty case where every twist confuses you a little and maintains your attention until the resolution.
