This is an excellent story- where we get a fantastic view inside the minds of the villains. But this is very much aimed at people familiar with the comics. There's very little physical descriptions nor backstory as to who anyone it. It really assumes you know these characters. But, if you've watched a chunk of the MCU you'll recognize enough familiar faces. The production and acting is absolutely top notch and I had an absolute blast.

The depth of thought Max Brooks put into analyzing every aspect of the zombie war... then binding it to human struggle and experience makes this one of the greatest novels of science fiction in recent memory. If you don't believe me, check out the stellar cast involved. The only way to get this much world-class talent is with something that's equally world class.

Harry's journey is scaling up, and this time Jim Butcher does his best Roland Emmerich impersonation. It's epic and widescreen. It's one giant battle and it's sometimes exhausting with the constant fighting. But he sticks the landing and I had fun. Of particular highlight is the short story afterwards. I think my allergies are playing up because it got really misty in here. And Butcher's ability to tie something so short into such a neat bow is quite breathtaking. Marsters of course remains at the top of my audiobook narrators.

I've noted that some people find the narrator's accent choices inappropriate or not great. He voices so many people in this book, it's a tall ask for each one to be great. But they were distinct and when we jumped between each person's point of view, I knew who was talking.

This was a ton more exciting (and depressing) than I expected. What a great accounting of this compounding disaster. It's heart-breaking to hear what everyone went through.

First: There's reviews complaining this is out of order. There is one flash forward at the start, then it is in chronological order. Wtf.

Second: The narrator's accent is absolutely perfect. People have accents. They pronounce things differently. "Afghanistan" is pronounced differently by the people of Afghanistan. Sorry it's not Westernized enough for you. I did listen to this at a faster speed (but I tend to do that anyway).

This gave me such a great sense of Afghanistan and a huge amount of respect for Ukmina. She doesn't just have "the courage of a man" she has more courage... and strength than most people walking this planet.

Highly recommended.

If you want a post apocalypse that's interesting but isn't going to churn your stomach, then this is your book. The story is boosted by the author's knowledge and interesting situations. But it's also hampered by the author's wish fulfilment and inability to truly hurt his characters. I almost wish it was first person, as the author's voice and focus is so rooted to the main character's.

The first book is really something quite special. It's the marriage of character and plot into such a tight scenario that was frankly stunning. This second book extends the same intent, but it isn't quite as water-tight as the first one. One not being quite as good, it's still a great story. Finty's performance of each of the characters was excellent. But I found I had to crank the speed up to 125% to keep up with the pace of the story.

I love literature. I love Margaret Atwood, Donna Tartt and Michael Chabon. But I had no idea how much I also loved artisanally, crafted d*ck and fart jokes... It's like I played with these guys in high school. I guiltily laughed my way through the entire book. Special shoutout for the narrator and the production design. The voices and delivery are all absolutely perfect. The effects are subtle and immersive. Brilliant. This is WAY better than it has any right to be.

I draw comics. I love the Sandman and I love audiobooks. But I hate audio dramas. This whole "Movie in your mind" garbage reeks of overblown hyperbole as these productions over-act and overcompensate for what they feel is the lack of visual stimulus. But The Sandman audiobook made me realize that I actually do love wonderfully acted, subtly directed audiodramas. This felt like reading the comics again, but retold in a fresh new way. Characters beautifully realized by Kieth and Dringenberg (and others) on the page are now lovingly rendered by Neil himself reading Dirk Magg's script and a cast of actors. The actors... Wow. James McAvoy brought a wonderful gravitas and base for the narrative. There are just too many standouts to name them all. But Taron Egerton as John Constantine brought a charisma and energy to John Constantine that as a long-time Hellbazer reader, I found so new yet just as interesting and engaging as the comics. The music... It's great throughout, but in Urania Blackwell's story Facade, it's a true character unto itself. Epic while understated. Impossibly brilliant. Sound effects are subtle and feel like the audiotrack of a movie rather than the disruptive, childish blaring most audiodramas have. And the story? I still maintain Neil Gaimen's Sandman is the best thing he's ever written. Beyond the lavishly researched details, the texture of this world is so compelling. Whimsical but brutal. Horrific and beautiful. Dirk Magg's incredible direction here is something that should be held up as a gold standard. I've never experienced anything like it. He managed to re-communicate the incredible artwork and Neil's narrative into something as fresh as it is familiar. There's only one gripe. My favorite quote was dropped. In the comics, when a dying person asked Death, "Is that all I get?" she replied, "You get what anyone gets. A lifetime." A small sacrifice. Extremely highly recommended.

Great female protagonist

I discovered Redemption through Will Jordan's YouTube channel, The Critical Drinker. I enjoyed his narrative character's openly hostile amusing and articulate narration towards things that are executed poorly... His wrath especially focused on terrible female and "diversity casting" characters. Then I realized he was an author and I decided to see if he could put his money where his mouth was. He can tear female characters down well enough. But can he write a good one of his own? He can. In fact, the book's great female co-protagonist and dark cynicism/realism really set it apart. And I've read a lot of spy thrillers. While on the surface his main female character seems a Mary Sue, she is also deeply flawed, and those traits rear themselves up over and over again. As her backstory is unveiled, she has greater and greater depth. Her relationship with the male protagonist is also enjoyable in how it oscillates both dramatically and believably. She's definitely the draw and the focus of the book. Supporting characters are fantastic, fleshed out and developed wonderfully. It's actually Drake himself who has the least agency and is the least interesting in the mosaic of incredibly fascinating supporting characters and relationships. The narrator does an excellent job on Ryan's voice and the narration, but his versions of everyone else range from fine to good enough. I ended up speeding him up 10% just to match the pace of the plot. If you love spy thrillers, get this book. If you love great female action characters, get this book. If you love great structure and foreshadowing, get this book. Highly enjoyable.
