Historia
Unlike all previous versions of rock 'n' roll history, this book omits almost every iconic performer and ignores the storied events and turning points everyone knows. Instead, in a daring stroke, Greil Marcus selects 10 songs recorded between 1956 and 2008 and then proceeds to dramatize how each embodies rock 'n' roll as a thing in itself in the story it tells, inhabits, and acts out - a new language, something new under the sun.

Disappointment on many levels

Any additional comments?
What ruins this as an audio book unfortunately is the narrator. Rollins reads every line as if he were doing a dramatic movie trailer voice-over. The drama, pitch, speed and timbre are so distracting it makes the book virtually unlistenable. I'm sure the book is an insightful read - assuming you can tolerate the pretentious copy of a music writer trying way to hard to be witty with his wordplay at the expense of a cohesive narrative. Someone needs to tell Rollins that the Emperor has no clothes.

If my review heading intrigues you, perhaps this quirky tale will too. The narration is wonderfully done - perfect timbre, pitch and intonation for a story of this sort. This audiobook kept the whole family engaged for a seven hour road trip!
