Historia
From 1501 to 1505, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti both lived and worked in Florence. Leonardo was a charming, handsome 50-year-old at the peak of his career. Michelangelo was a temperamental sculptor in his mid-20s, desperate to make a name for himself. Michelangelo is a virtual unknown when he returns to Florence and wins the commission to carve what will become one of the most famous sculptures of all time: David.

not for me
Revisado: 03-19-25
The premise had so much promise... but. Not a single fleshed out or sympathetic character, shallow melodramatic writing style, many anachronistic phrases, and if anyone's left eye twitched one more time I would have run screaming into traffic. The narration was not smooth listening, and the Italian accents seemed awkward. Kudos for motivating me to look up all works of art by Michelangelo. I had already done a deep dive into Leonardo da Vinci while reading Walter Issacson's splendid biography.

Historia
In the wake of the 1929 stock market crash, Lanny Budd’s financial acumen and his marriage into great wealth enable him to continue the lifestyle he has always enjoyed. But the devastation the collapse has wrought on ordinary citizens has only strengthened Lanny’s socialist ideals. In Germany to visit relatives, Lanny encounters a disturbing atmosphere of hatred and jingoism. But Lanny’s gravest fear is the threat a national socialist government poses to the German Jewish family of Hansi, the musician husband of Lanny’s sister, Bess.

A unique account without the benefit of hindsight
Revisado: 08-03-24
I think every book (and there have been many) that I have read about this time period were written after World War Two. I cannot begin to comprehend what it would have been like to read this book when it was published in 1942, with the war raging on and the defeat of the Nazis by no means a sure thing. Knowing the eventual outcome didn't lessen the horror I felt for these characters who were in the midst of the Nazi regime's ascent to power, witnessing what was happening in those years and months leading up to that greatest conflict of all time.
