Historia
When Aida Hernandez was born in 1987 in Agua Prieta, Mexico, the nearby US border was little more than a worn-down fence. Eight years later, Aida’s mother took her and her siblings to live in Douglas, Arizona. By then, the border had become one of the most heavily policed sites in America. Undocumented, Aida fought to make her way. She learned English, watched Friends, and, after having a baby at 16, dreamed of teaching dance and moving with her son to New York City. But life had other plans.

Gut wrenching true story of the borderlands
Revisado: 09-06-24
This gutwrenching, real life take on life in the borderlands was insightful and gripping. part memoir, part oral history, and many parts thorough research, this nonfiction book reads like a novel. As a resident of Cochise County myself, I was surprised and delighted to hear some familiar names and to learn more of the stories and histories of people in our area. I found this story to be a very accurate picture of the impact of policies on people's lives in our region. It is also a very real look at what it's like living in poverty in the US today. I'm so grateful to have read this story and to understand our own history through the eyes of those living it.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Dark complex characters with little plot
Revisado: 07-21-24
JK Rowling does an amazing job of creating complex characters and making them feel like real people. However, usually characters have some sort of redeeming qualities, the characters in this book had none. It's a dark story full of miserable people with very little plot points moving the story forward. I kept waiting for there to be a point and for the story to move forward in some way. It does at the end, but this book was way too long with nothing moving the story. I do appreciate the very real look at the welfare and support systems presented, and the real look at what life may be like for people who may find themselves living in a similar situation. I just felt the story (and reader's attention spans) would have benefitted from a point to it all.
It was excellently performed.

Good story, cheesy music
Revisado: 05-26-24
I really liked the story, but the background piano music that came and went was distracting and cheesy. I also didn't love the long narratives of backstory instead of showing the reader what happened through perhaps a flashback or something.

Another riveting thriller from Robert Galbraith. This mystery keeps you guessing until the last chapter. Robert Glenister brings the cast of extremely developed characters to life with his performance. You'll think you're listening to a full cast. I love this series!!

Gripping story only made better by amazing performance!
Revisado: 03-26-24
I love this book! It was a gripping mystery that keeps the reader guessing until the end. The characters are interesting and the plot has turns and twists that kept me hooked! This story was only enhanced by this amazing performance. Glenister nails different characters and accents, making it as if you are listening to an entire cast. I highly recommend this book (and series) to mystery book lovers!

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

A Story Meant to be read aloud
Revisado: 11-28-23
I loved the story and the narration. This tale is meant to be read aloud and the narrator told the story just like one of the characters telling stories in the Swan. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of heartbreak and mystery and highly recommend others take this trip on the river!

Amazing nail-biter, spot on description of cults!
Revisado: 10-11-23
I absolutely loved this book! I was anxiously awaiting this release, and it did not disappoint!
Without giving too much away, I can say that I believe the descriptions of being brought into a cult are spot on. I think that difficult 6 treated with much care and that it really showed cult members as true victims and not as stupid sheep (as is often a portrayal). She also expertly described the tactics used to indoctrinate normal, intelligent people into cult behavior. All of this deep human analysis was wrapped into a nail-biting thriller plot with unexpected twists and turns!! I highly recommend!
PS. I will caution that if you grew up in a controlling religion, not a cult but even in an orthodox household, (I had this experience), this content can be triggering. I found myself doing some introspection of my own experiences during this reading, this was healthy for me, but just take it as a word of caution if that applies.

Excellent story, but read a physical copy
Revisado: 08-23-23
I love this series and loved bringing the dynamics of social media and the cyber domain into a thriller mystery. I also love the Robyn and Strike characters, they are being developed so richly! I have to echo other reviews that this book would have been better enjoyed in print. The Twitter and cyber dialogues were tiresome to listen to and could be hard to follow. I want to iterate that this narrator is EXCELLENT! He really embodies each character's voice so that you feel you could be watching a show. However, the cyber-dialogue material is just better suited for a print read.

Meh for the story, nope for soft porn
Revisado: 08-15-23
This book read like a soft porn hallmark movie (if there was such a thing). Predictable storyline, flat characters, and WAY too graphic sex scenes. This is the 3rd Colleen Hoover I've read, and her storyline and characters are always rather flat, I would pick them up for a quick, light read. But none of the other books had the descriptive soft porn scenes that I found myself skipping through. The only there is more than one star is that I expect a quick, light, read and she does accomplish that with her books. The plot moves along at a good pace.
The 2nd narrator was awful, I don't like to stop listening after I've started a book, but I almost did with this one. As others have said, I thought that narrator could've been AI or a Siri knockoff. The first narrator is OK.
The "twist" at the end was horrible and revealed in a "tell all letter" that intentionally leaves readers guessing. I agree that the letter trope is just plain lazy writing.

Captivating and compassionate listen!
Revisado: 07-19-22
I couldn't stop listening to this book. I love how well the author captured the internal struggle of women who are in domestic violence situations. I also loved the apt descriptions of how someone can end up in a homeless situation and how little options they have to get back on their feet.
