Section of Audio Recording Missing from Audible
Revisado: 10-01-19
A sizable portion of the original audio recording missing from Audible. Perhaps as much as a full chapter of the book (around 50 pages).
To further complicate things, some 15 minutes of the 'missing' audio from the beginning of the book is inserted randomly in the middle of a chapter about 3/4 through.
The missing and inserting of chapter portions hopelessly screws-up the narrative. The 'missing' section is the critical battle scene where several of the main characters are wounded/killed and is referred to in several sections of the book -- only to have them magically return when part of the missing audio is re-inserted in the middle of a chapter near the end.
As a side note: It's a great story and deserves 5-stars in book form. I'm not actually sure how so many 5-star reviews appear for the audio book. It's hard to believe so many listened to the audio and actually followed what was happening with the missing and out-of-sequence audio sections. Sort of makes me suspicious of the entire Audible rating system... Either reviewers are not listening to the books, or Audible is cooking them --- I'll let you decide....

Historia
A year ago a boy was found murdered at a girlsʼ boarding school, and the case was never solved. Detective Stephen Moran has been waiting for his chance to join Dublin’s Murder Squad when 16-year-old Holly Mackey arrives in his office with a photo of the boy with the caption: “I know who killed him". Stephen joins with Detective Antoinette Conway to reopen the case - beneath the watchful eye of Holly’s father, fellow detective Frank Mackey. The private underworld of teenage girls turns out to be more mysterious and more dangerous than the detectives imagined.

Avoid... If you liked 'In the Woods', Just Avoid.
Revisado: 02-27-17
The 50% police procedural is OK.
But. And it's a big But...
The 50% back story (prime suspects are high-school valley-girls with magic powers) is just ridiculous. I'm not sure why a police procedural needs a teen chick-lit component. If Ms. French just deleted 50% of the book, it would be worthy of the 4+ rating its garnered. On a side note, I'd be very suspicious of the 4 and 5 star ratings -- the book is at least 5 hrs too long and just drones on and on with worthless drivel. I'd suspect the 5-star ratings are publisher's salt.
I'm a big fan of 'In the Woods' and thought 'The Likeness' was ridiculous. If you are of the same opinion, then just avoid.

Starts well, unbelievable ending.
Revisado: 04-04-16
Starts rather well, but too predictable... The ending is just too ridiculous. One thing to set yourself up as live bate, but it's another to sleep with a someone you know is a serial killer...

The most contrived plot I’ve read this year
Revisado: 05-25-14
This was arguably the most ridiculous and contrived plot I’ve read this year – full stop…
Let’s just see... You’ve got a minor Polish drug/human trafficker making inroads into England… The British Govt wants him stopped. So instead of doing something simple, like getting MI6 to assassinate him, the British Govt decides to do something ridiculously contrived, complex and doomed to failure… You get an operative to assassinate the kingpin’s girlfriend (a completely innocent woman --- and oh BTW --- just happens to look exactly like DCI Carol Jorden) and a few other minor member's of the kingpin's team, but leave El Hefe and his evil Lieutenant completely unmolested... and psychologically vulnerable...
Can you guess where the plot goes from here? That’s right – straight down the toilet.
I’ve read about ten of Val McDermid’s novels… And most of them are very good... I can’t believe Val actually wrote this – the characters, plot and dialog are contrived and totally unbelievable and just not up to her other works. Either she was having a bad year, simply pumped-one-out to satisfy a publishing contract or was the work of a ghost writer… Take your pick...
Don’t spend your credits here… Even if you love all her other books -- trust me, I don't think she wrote this one...

Historia
A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless thriller. A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life.

This series is going down fast
Revisado: 09-12-12
TG has produced some solid 4-star books in the Rizzoli series, but The addition of Isles has really set the series on a downward spiral.
I not even going to cover all the plot issues with this dog... Let's just say that a 9+ months pregnant and overdue police detective is usually placed on desk duty at least and typically mandatory maternity leave, not tackling offenders and other completely improbable activities.
This book is 2 stars at best. If this were a film, it would get two thumbs-down
