Historia
America was once the world’s dream factory. We turned imagination into reality, from curing polio to landing on the Moon to creating the internet. And we were confident that more wonders lay just over the horizon: clean and infinite energy, a cure for cancer, computers and robots as humanity’s great helpers, and space colonies. (Also, of course, flying cars.) Science fiction, from The Jetsons to Star Trek, would become fact.

Great ideas but not a great writer
Revisado: 07-18-24
Interesting concepts. The author is smart and makes great points. But the writing is clumsy and the story is not well structured. And never read your own book!

Historia
A century ago, sleep was considered a state of nothingness—even a primitive habit that we could learn to overcome. Then, an immigrant scientist and his assistant spent a month in the depths of a Kentucky cave, making nationwide headlines and thrusting sleep science to the forefront of our consciousness. Award-winning journalist Kenneth Miller weaves together science and history to tell the story of four outsider scientists who took sleep science from fringe discipline to mainstream obsession through spectacular experiments, technological innovation, and single-minded commitment.

Light on Science

More a biography of scientists then the science of sleep. I found the writing a bit prodding.

Historia
From facial recognition—capable of checking us onto flights or identifying undocumented residents—to automated decision systems that inform everything from who gets loans to who receives bail, each of us moves through a world determined by data-empowered algorithms. But these technologies didn't just appear: they are part of a history that goes back centuries, from the census enshrined in the US Constitution to the birth of eugenics in Victorian Britain to the development of Google search.

Plodding

A few interesting stories buried in lots of things we’ve all heard before. Stilted writing.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Excessive concern for violent rapist/murderer.
Revisado: 03-13-19
This book is meh on the true crime aspect. There is zero attempt at building tension. The author repeatedly comments on the “lack of treatment” this horrible criminal received as a teen convict. (News flash: there is no known treatment for sadistic serial killers.) There is no attempt to address the trauma experienced by the female victims. The author ends the story bemoaning the fact that history has forgotten this guy. Personally, I think that’s the right ending. Why should he be famous? Don’t bother listening.
