Historia
In 1783, with the signing of the Peace of Paris, the American Revolution was complete. And yet even as the newly independent United States secured peace with Great Britain, it found itself losing an escalating military conflict on its borderlands. The enemy was the indigenous people of the Ohio Valley, who rightly saw the new nation as a threat to their existence.

Fantastic work. Facts are facts. The founders used the words extermination themselves. History, practiced honesty should not and is not used to validate beliefs or opinions.

Historia
A magnificent history of the opening years of the Civil War by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Bruce Catton. The first book in Bruce Catton's Pulitzer Prize-winning Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Mr. Lincoln's Army is a riveting history of the early years of the Civil War, when a fledgling Union Army took its stumbling first steps under the command of the controversial general George McClellan.

Hagiography be damned - this is a fine narrative
Revisado: 08-11-22
Although much historiography has rendered some Catton’s cannon passe this still holds as a finely crafted narrative that all American history enthusiasts should indulge. Perfectly enjoyable.

Essential reading & listening
Revisado: 09-23-21
Read & listen - this is one of the greatest works of modern political historiography. Another recommendation is Karl Popper’s an Open Society & its Enemies. Open, law abiding, democratic-republics are our key to stability and happiness. We must not digress to simple utopianism for explanation for it leads to totalitarianism.

Historia
The gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico’s powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren’t often connected in our heated discussions of gun control - but they should be. In Ioan Grillo’s groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth.

Excellent
Revisado: 08-25-21
Issues that overlap but are not necessarily synthesized in enough frequency. The drug, gun, crime, ecosystem exists and the roles of both legitimate and illicit trade contribute to global violence. This book particularly hammers down on the nexus of America’s problems and their run off into Central America & Mexico. This is not an anti-gun book, just a harsh reality check.

Historia
From 1866 to 1876, more than 3,000 free African Americans and their white allies were killed in cold blood by terrorist organizations in the South. Over the years, this fact would not only be forgotten, but a series of exculpatory myths would arise to cover the tracks of this orchestrated campaign of atrocity and violence.

Historia
The U.S.-backed military invasion of Cuba in 1961 remains one of the most ill-fated blunders in American history, with echoes of the event reverberating even today. Despite the Kennedy administration’s initial public insistence that the United States had nothing to do with the invasion, it soon became clear that the complex operation had been planned and approved by the best and brightest minds at the highest reaches of Washington, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and President John F. Kennedy himself.

A cross of diplomatic, political, and military history that encapsulates the thought processes of those involved and their motives.
It is not a tale of benevolence in action nor naked aggression. Just men trying to do the best for their countries.

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. Historia
In this landmark work that will forever change your understanding of how and why America went to war in Vietnam, author Fredrik Logevall taps newly accessible diplomatic archives in several nations and traces the path that led two Western nations to tragically lose their way in the jungles of Southeast Asia. He brings to life the bloodiest battles of France’s final years in Indochina - and describes how, from an early point, a succession of American leaders made disastrous policy choices that put America on its own collision course with history.

His younger friend, Bart, as well as others from Gabriel's childhood join him in working for the Zetas, boosting cars and smuggling drugs, eventually catching the eye of the cartel's leadership.
