Historia
My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me. A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him. Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse.

Finally gave up.
Revisado: 09-02-24
Made it to book 3. Finally threw up my hands. I don’t mind sex. I don’t mind violence (as long as it’s not against the dogs).
I allowed a lot for this book, feeling a bit of shame for wanting to chuck it after the first book. But during the third book when she’s known a guy for 10 minutes and they’re gonna have sex, I finally just said screw it (intended).
I had to start out by increasing the speed to 1.1. The reader was driving me crazy. That helped a little but the content, the reader couldn’t improve on. Sydney Rye is just not a person I’d want to know.

Book ok, performance….
Revisado: 06-30-23
I liked the book. I’m not familiar with the series at all. But while I liked the book, I did not like the reader. It’s hard to criticize just the reading of a book (especially one read by the author), but it seems like the book was just “read.” Feels like I could have done better myself. Kinda sad.

Historia
Thomas Abbey is a man stuck in a rut. To kick-start his life, he takes a sabbatical to work on a biography of his favorite writer, the mysterious Marshall France. Although Abbey has been warned that France's daughter, Anna, has blocked all previous attempts at her father's biography, he is surprised to find her the soul of small-town hospitality and quite excited about Abbey's proposal. Even stranger than Anna's behavior, though, is the town itself. The people seem to know what their future holds - freak accidents and all - down to the hour.

Still Saying "Huh?" After a Week
Revisado: 06-22-14
Where does The Land of Laughs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the lower half of my list.
If you’ve listened to books by Jonathan Carroll before, how does this one compare?
I haven't listened to others by Jonathan Carrol. Probably won't now.
Which scene was your favorite?
None.
If you could take any character from The Land of Laughs out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Saxony. She seemed interesting, but not fleshed out. I'm a researcher (as she was) and I'd be fascinated to know how she found out some of her facts. (That point is never addressed.)
Many people on here have said that they would like to take Thomas (the main character) out to dinner. But I found him very self-serving. I don't think I would have enjoyed the dinner at all. He probably would have angered me and in a juvenile way to get back at him, I probably would have spent the whole dinner talking about his father and what a great actor he was. (That won't make sense to anyone who hasn't read the book.)
Any additional comments?
I bought this book in error. I ran across a review of author Neil Gaiman and wanted to read some of his work. I ran his name through Audible and found a couple, including this one. Once I purchased it, I found that it wasn't written by him but only on his suggested list.
I finished this book over a week ago and I'm still shaking my head. Various points pop up into memory and start me off again. I argue with myself over whether I should return the book for a refund or if I liked it.
If you ask me if I'm sorry that I read it, I would have to say no. (Unlike "Albert Nobbs" where I not only wanted my money back for the cost, but also wanted the hours of my life back that it took to finish it.) If you asked if I would purchase it again, knowing what I know now, I would have to say no.
At least the narrator was very good.
The reviews are divided on this book, so it seems you will have to judge for yourself.

Not a good listen. Shame for a Matheson novel.
Revisado: 05-15-14
Where does Somewhere in Time rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Writing was good. Narration bad. Probably falls in the middle to low. Strange because I've only gotten a couple bad reads.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I looked forward to listening to this novel for quite some time. Somewhere In Time was one of my favorite movies. I even pestered Audible for about a year to get it (under the novel's name of Bid Time Return). Why not, since they already had I am Legend, The Shrinking Man, Hell House, What Dreams May Come, and quite a few others. I had finally given up when I ran the author's name and saw the book listed as Somewhere in Time. I've listened to the whole book. Over all, I'd say I liked it. The only part I objected to was the way it was read. He was good at male and female voices, but the constant tremulous voice of the protagonist was really irritating. It came across as a small, fearful person. And maybe my recollection of Christopher Reeve in the roll made me think that this was not the way it should be. But I also don't think that a person portrayed in that manner could attract a strong, female character like Elise McKenna. I don't think you can talk like that for so many hours in real life. I understand that the protagonist was worried; but not to that degree.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I think they already did that. :)
Any additional comments?
Beyond the problem listed above, the writing was good so it was still a pleasurable listen.

Very Well Done. Tense, Gripping.
Revisado: 05-20-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Oh yes. Characters are well developed, so is the plot.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Katniss, of course. But I like all of them. Katniss because she isn't pretentious. She's just trying to get through the day.
Which character – as performed by Carolyn McCormick – was your favorite?
I liked them all. But I particularly liked Rue and Prim. She was very good at showing their vulnerability.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! As I've stated in another review, it's a good thing I'm retired otherwise I would have had to call in sick. I couldn't put it down.
Any additional comments?
Looking forward to the rest of the series. I've decided to read them before seeing the movies as so much has to be left out of a 2 hour story.

Totally Believable! Great Read!
Revisado: 05-20-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Storm Front to be better than the print version?
Of course. But then my eyes have to work too hard now to read books, so audio books are my only choice. But although I no longer have a choice, if I did, audio books would be my choice. I am not an actor/voiceover artist. I have "re-read" books by listening to them and find that I get so much more out of them with the audio book. Much easier to understand plots, motivations, etc. When I read, I am "monochromatic" and the only character. With an audio book, the world opens up with every color and all different characters. I've found that with books I read earlier and did not enjoy reading, my opinion has changed after listening to it. I now enjoy the book and it's wonderful!
What other book might you compare Storm Front to and why?
The books by Orson Scott Card.
Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He has Harry Dresden down pat: down and out sometimes, loser sometimes, a guy just trying to do right. Although I know him from TV, I haven't heard any of his other book performances. I would definitely listen to him again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Although it didn't make me cry, it did make me laugh. The book refused to be put down. Good thing I'm retired, otherwise I would have had to call in sick to finish it.
I had watched the TV series on The Dresden Files, but the books are so much better.
Any additional comments?
I'll be getting the rest of the series. Can't get enough of Wizard Harry Dresden!

Contrived
Revisado: 05-20-13
What disappointed you about The Lost Symbol?
The story seemed forced and coincidences used to make things fit.
What could Dan Brown have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The story seemed unrealistic. Something I didn't find with the other two stories of his that I have read. At no time could I say, "Yes! That could have happened." I need to believe a story and he didn't let me do that.
Which character – as performed by Paul Michael – was your favorite?
None
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed his other two books. There is a fourth one out now. I'll give him one more try.

Based on decades of research and the aid of scholars from around the world, God Kings brings a scholarly and educated look into the world of Royal bloodlines. Very Disappointed
Revisado: 07-10-12
What would have made God Kings better?
A real reader and better recording. Kill the music.
What did you like best about this story?
The facts.
Would you be willing to try another one of Hugh Montgomery’s performances?
NEVER EVER!
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, frustration, anger.
Any additional comments?
This book was definitely not worth the money. Most of it cannot be understood. The recording is very poor. It sounds like it was recorded in a cavern. Add the spooky music in the background and only half of it can be understood. (Who decided to put a song with words over a speaker??)Hugh Montgomery may be a great academic, but he is a thoroughly lousy reader. I might have given this more stars if he had stayed out of it and had a reader perform it.I liked the facts that I could understand on this recording. But everything else was worse than useless. The stupid music that I think is only there to take up time, needs to be deleted. It's not nice that I'm paying for a 68 minutes of book and almost half of it is JUST music (and bad music at that). If I could, I'd get my money back from Audible.Like someone else mentioned on here, there were no reviews when I purchased it. I might not do that again.

Inspiring without being cheesy
Revisado: 01-31-10
I am a dog person, not a cat person, so that was easy. But I had a bit of trouble keeping going through a couple parts as they closely reflected things that are happening with my dog. But how they were done was good and eventually not as painful as I thought they would be. On the whole, I loved the entire book. The dog's perspective was well done. The book gave me something to think about as to how to live my life. Good narrator. I'll be reading it again.

Read Far Too Slowly
Revisado: 05-07-09
This book about the theft of the Mona Lisa would be better read (as opposed to heard). Although the reader has a pleasant tone, her pace is sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooow. This 6 hour 44 minute book would probably just be a 3 hour book if read by someone else. Her pace makes me feel like an idiot who needs to be spoken to slowly and clearly, so it's coming off a bit insulting. I've put the book aside for now. Don't know if I'll go back. Maybe there's an Audible Cliff Notes copy?
