Historia
Tony Malik, a half-Irish, half-Arab FBI agent based in New York, specializes in tracking money from drug and arms deals. His life takes a dramatic turn when a long-term relationship ends and his job hangs in the balance. Amid personal turmoil, Malik becomes intrigued by his Palestinian father's past. He decides to visit his ancestral homeland for his niece's wedding, accepting a seemingly simple FBI assignment along the way.

An thoughtful thriller
Revisado: 04-22-25
The author in telling the story packs in the ways Palestinians, especially in the West Bank, suffer from the Israeli occupation. By ending the story with October 7, I grasp why many Israelis want to kill every last Palestinian. But the book is not political-historical non-fiction. It is a thriller, full of suspense and hard to put down. I have one quip, for others who have listened to the book: How could Jamal, who fled alone to his initial hideout, have known at that point that Dina was a collaborator?

Historia
In 1850, an impoverished twenty-five-year-old named Fredericka Mandelbaum came to New York in steerage and worked as a peddler on the streets of Lower Manhattan. By the 1870s she was a fixture of high society and an admired philanthropist. How was she able to ascend from tenement poverty to vast wealth? In the intervening years, “Marm” Mandelbaum had become the country’s most notorious “fence”—a receiver of stolen goods—and a criminal mastermind.

My book club loved it
Revisado: 04-02-25
The book makes for great fiction based on history. I learned a lot about the three historical periods in the book: the Loire Valley of France during 1940-42, the work of Israel’s Youth Aliyah in 1946 in the Loire Valley, and the naval crisis involving France and Israel at the onset of Israel’s attack on Beirut in the late 1960’s. The major characters are well drawn and some characters are historical. Listening to the book intensely engaged me. My only criticism is the author’s repeated complaint, which was extraneous to the narrative and historically false, that the League of Nations in 1922 robbed the Jews in Palestine of the area now known as Jordan.

Historia
The Good Spy is Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Kai Bird’s compelling portrait of the remarkable life and death of one of the most important operatives in CIA history - a man who, had he lived, might have helped heal the rift between Arabs and the West. On April 18, 1983, a bomb exploded outside the American Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people. The attack was a geopolitical turning point. It marked the beginning of Hezbollah as a political force, but even more important, it eliminated America’s most influential and effective intelligence officer in the Middle East - CIA operative Robert Ames.

I found interesting that Robert Ames, a CIA officer fluent in Arabic, was deeply empathetic to the Palestinians. The peace plan Bob Ames suggested to President Reagan shared details with the Oslo accord of a decade later.

Agents of Innocence is the book that established David Ignatius's reputation as a master of the novel of contemporary espionage. Into the treacherous world of shifting alliances and arcane subterfuge comes idealistic CIA man Tom Rogers. Posted in Beirut to penetrate the PLO and recruit a high-level operative, he soon learns the heavy price of innocence in a time and place that has no use for it.

Fabulous spy story based on real people
Revisado: 03-19-25
The exciting narrative, with the historical background of Lebanon from 1969-1983, seemed unbelievable to me, until at the end I realized that the main character, Beirut CIA case-officer Tom Rogers is based on the famous Robert Ames, who died in the bombing of the American Embassy in Beirut. Tom Rogers recruited the deputy head of intelligence of Fatah and later mastermind of Black September, Jamal Ramwali, who is based on the real-life Ali Hassan Salameh. Fabulous spy story.

Historia
In Peter Beinart’s view, one story dominates Jewish communal life: that of persecution and victimhood. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of Jewish religious tradition and warps our understanding of Israel and Palestine. After Gaza, where Jewish texts, history, and language have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation, Beinart argues, Jews must tell a new story. After this war, whose horror will echo for generations, they must do nothing less than offer a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew?

As an American Jew in despair that the government of Israel after the second exchange of hostages seems set on restarting the war, I found Peter Beinart’s searing criticism of Israel’s 77 year oppression of the Palestinians brave and inspiring. He also may me reconsider the orthodoxies my community’s espouses.

A thorough review of Hamas’s history
Revisado: 03-02-25
The contrast after Hamas’s founding in 1987 and its rival the PLO is well done. It is clear that after 2007 when Hamas seized control over Gaza, Israel in bolstering Hamas with funds either did not understand sufficiently the terrorist nature of Hamas or was so eager weaken the PLO that it was willing to countenance its terrorist rival. The book takes a measured view of the current war between Israel and Hamas. The reader’s tone overdoes the harshness that the topic of Hamas might suggest.

Historia
Vladimir Jabotinsky (1880–1940) was a man of huge paradoxes and contradictions and has been the most misunderstood of all Zionist politicians—a first-rate novelist, a celebrated Russian journalist, and the founder of the branch of Zionism now headed by Benjamin Netanyahu. This biography, the first in English in nearly two decades, undertakes to answer central questions about Jabotinsky as a writer, a political thinker, and a leader. Hillel Halkin sets aside the stereotypes to which Jabotinsky has been reduced by his would-be followers and detractors alike.

Revisado: 02-19-25
The author gives great insight into Jabotinsky’s goals for a Jewish Palestine. Forced to remain out of Palestine in the 1930s, Jabotinsky appears to have been more of a symbolic head than the practical leader of Irgun.
