If you are looking for more reminders to take care of yourself while caregiving or how not to beat yourself up over your perceived failings, this Chicken Soup For The Caregiver Soul-like book is for you.
If you are looking for concrete steps with background explanations, this book won’t help much. I am still confused over the author’s advice to “clean out the bathroom and linens” of a passed loved one before addressing/securing valuables. And no mention of locking down the credit of a terminal family member as soon as possible to avoid identity theft? I would have appreciated much more advice on how to care for a parent without infantilizing them, even when said parent has become like a terrible teenager or worse, a two year old.

Wow. Placing this novel in my top 20 of all time. The writing, the narrator, the story, the ending…. I have no doubt I will listen to this book again. And probably again.

I found the novel a little hard to follow between the numerous characters but it was well worth the effort to pay close attention. It was emotional to follow the toll of the ever-escalating persecution amongst one extended family.
I very much appreciated the historical events backstory and facts between chapters- a very poignant reminder WWIi wasn’t all about Europe and Germany wasn’t the only hateful and greedy aggressor.

I’ll start with the easy: Reese Witherspoon is simply MASTERFUL in the narration of this book; I now cannot imagine anyone being able to deliver this challenging novel any more beautifully.
And now the hard:
This book is hard. When it was first released, I quickly blocked out its existence and all the rumblings of controversy surrounding this “sequel” novel; I couldn’t stand any negativity regarding the author and characters of one of my most beloved novels. At one point of my life I was fully prepared to name all my children and future pets after all the characters of To Kill A Mockingbird, I was that smitten.

Obviously, I finally relented to curiosity.
This book confirms my belief that Harper Lee possesses an otherworldly ability to write, and compose extremely complex exchanges with a simple and stunningly beautiful voice. Her talent is singular.

Still, while I loved the writing, this book is so difficult for me to absorb. I know my brain will continue to find the knowledge Go Set A Watchman was written BEFORE To Kill A Mockingbird utterly incomprehensible to me until the day I die.
While a big portion of me wants to pretend this novel doesn’t exist, I recommend it, and will shout from the rooftops its valuable reminder lesson (which is truly timely in the 2024 political climate) of how and why to accept and successfully coexist with people adhering to polar opposite views from yours.
If you are a TKAM diehard, don your emotional armor first and then enjoy the listen.

The chapter of Barb and Caro in the coffee shop is worth the price/rime alone. I listened to that chapter 3 times and laughed my ______ off. The book is kind of predictable and a little bit of a let down thereafter. I don’t believe I would still feel this way if self-absorbed Sadie was a minor character instead of the main.

The narrators were fantastic- I especially looked forward to Genevieve’s parts, which I felt a little guilty over because Xe Sands is a fav of mine.

A slow burn novel… and in many places bogged down by an abundance of superfluous detail. And when I finished, I realized several story lines were not addressed enough and I was left wondering why ink was sacrificed for the lack of point.
While I am glad I reached the ending, I had a few moments I almost abandoned this novel due to difficulty finding a connection with any of the characters to want to see them through the conclusion.

Upon the release of the movie, I decided to revisit one of my favorite books of all time. The writing and research is so well-done, it’s beyond description.
However, if you are like me, a Seattle native, or have a deep connection to the PNW, listening to this book will give you a kind of outburst syndrome, as you will uncontrollably correct aloud the pronunciation of the many places the narrator butchers. Don’t get me wrong, Edward Herrman is a fantastic reader and his tenor is perfect for this book; I just dearly wish someone gave him Native American linguistic pointers beforehand.
Alki is Al-kai, not Al-key.

Eye-opening historical account of how luxury hotels evolved at the turn of the 20th century, as well as the you-could-never-guess expansive influence they had- and still have to this day.
