Historia
Erika Krouse has one of those faces. “I don’t know why I’m telling you this,” people say, spilling confessions. In fall 2002, Erika accepts a new contract job investigating lawsuits as a private investigator. The role seems perfect for her, but she quickly realizes she has no idea what she’s doing. Then a lawyer named Grayson assigns her to investigate a sexual assault, a college student who was attacked by football players and recruits at a party a year earlier. Erika knows she should turn the assignment down.

Unique true crime memoir
Revisado: 04-08-23
An impressive true crime memoir from a novelist turned private eye investigating the rape cases from the university of Colorado back in the aughts.
This can at times read like a first person novel, really a tremendous piece of true crime work, one that should be hailed as a kind of a classic.

Historia
In 2016, the fate of Paramount Global’s entertainment empire hung precariously in the balance. Its founder and head, ninety-three-year-old Sumner M. Redstone, was facing a very public lawsuit brought by a former romantic companion, Manuela Herzer, which placed Sumner’s deteriorating health and questionable judgment under a harsh light.

Succession IRL
Revisado: 03-12-23
This was an eye popping book, far more insightful and illuminating into male corporate culture than the Weinstein books in that you see how an entire corporate monster can swing into action to defend a piece of trash like Moonves, and how it can continue to lionize sex creep Sumner Redstone.

The creator of Deadwood and NYPD Blue reflects on his tumultuous life, driven by a nearly insatiable creative energy and a matching penchant for self-destruction. Life’s Work is a profound memoir from a brilliant mind taking stock as Alzheimer’s loosens his hold on his own past.

Historia
In the eyes of eighteen-year-old Hua Hsu, the problem with Ken—with his passion for Dave Matthews, Abercrombie & Fitch, and his fraternity—is that he is exactly like everyone else. Ken, whose Japanese American family has been in the United States for generations, is mainstream; for Hua, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, who makes ’zines and haunts Bay Area record shops, Ken represents all that he defines himself in opposition to. The only thing Hua and Ken have in common is that, however they engage with it, American culture doesn’t seem to have a place for either of them.

Uplifting and heartbreaking
Revisado: 01-12-23
This book really brought me back. It’s such a nice memoir about college, the 90s, and friendship. There is a sad twist that doesn’t overwhelm the memoir, it instead enriches it.

It begins quietly on a balmy Southern night as some locals gather at Bo Peep’s, one of the town’s favorite watering holes. A confusing narrative of Savannah
Revisado: 11-08-22
Green is a gifted writer whose other books have been tight, focused, and in some cases unforgettable. Here he tries to write a big sprawling novel about Savannah and misses badly. The narrative is confusing and tension is constantly interrupted by bewildering chapters where people talk about flowers and campari.

Historia
On the morning of November 4, 2019, a caravan of women and children was ambushed by masked gunmen on a desolate stretch of road in northern Mexico controlled by the Sinaloa drug cartel. Firing semi-automatic weapons, the attackers killed nine people and gravely injured five more. The victims were members of the LeBaron and La Mora communities-fundamentalist Mormons whose forebears broke from the LDS Church and settled in Mexico when their religion outlawed polygamy in the late nineteenth century.

Great book about a recent event that was covered entirely without nuance at the time. What happened when a Mormon family was slaughtered in Mexico is still not known but there is a lot more to the story than we will ever know.

Historia
Dodger Stadium is an American icon. But the story of how it came to be goes far beyond baseball. The hills that cradle the stadium were once home to three vibrant Mexican American communities. In the early 1950s, those communities were condemned to make way for a utopian public housing project. Then, in a remarkable turn, public housing in the city was defeated amidst a Red Scare conspiracy.

I always knew the outline of the story of how Dodger Stadium was built, but this book goes very deep and paints a beautiful picture of the community lost and the culture of the stadium that took its place. This is a very nuanced story, full of good people on all sides.

Historia
Summer, 1976. Jesse and his brother, Edgar, are on the road in search of victims. They’re rovers, nearly indestructible nocturnal beings who must consume human blood in order to survive. For 70 years they’ve lurked on the fringes of society, roaming from town to town, dingy motel to dingy motel, stalking the transients, addicts, and prostitutes they feed on. This hard-boiled supernatural hell ride kicks off when the brothers encounter a young woman who disrupts their grim routine.

Fresh take on vampires
Revisado: 06-04-22
Lange is a great crime novelist, usually setting his novels in the deserts of Southern California. Here he turns his eyes towards the supernatural and comes up with a novel that is a real treat. Vampires aren't suave and sophisticated here, they are dirty bikers, and bar denizens.
