Historia
In the fourth century AD, a new faith exploded out of Palestine. Overwhelming the paganism of Rome, and converting the Emperor Constantine in the process, it resoundingly defeated a host of other rivals. Almost a thousand years later, all of Europe was controlled by Christian rulers, and the religion, ingrained within culture and society, exercised a monolithic hold over its population. But, as Peter Heather shows in this compelling new history, there was nothing inevitable about Christendom's rise to Europe-wide dominance.

Not great.
Revisado: 01-06-25
Better name eould be "Constantine and the Rise of the Roman Church".
Christendom is a misleading name, it truly does not cover that. Granted, it begins 300AD, but little to no back mention to the earliest of the church.
it begins with Constantine, and basically ends in 1300AD with Constantine.
No mention of the Coptic church, Ethiopian church.
Rome, and Constantine.
Little mention of the Eastern Orthodox, just a snip bit of the schism.
Follows a very monolithic line. Augustin barely mentioned. Aquinas just as a side.
Good detail to Saint Francis of Assisi and Dominique.
Author professes as I believe agnostic, he is Aldo the author. Very monotone, standard British voice, no emotion or depth.
I would argue, should a book be written by a believer, narrator should be at best on the fence.
And vice versa.
Finally, quite frankly you cannot cover true Christendom from 300-1300.
You must start 100AD to at least 1600AD. Preferably 1900AD.
That encompasses Christendom, before modernity.
Detailed, accurate, fair. Just not a book I'd personally read again.

Historia
Upon his election to the presidency, Abraham Lincoln inherited a country in crisis. Even before the Confederacy’s secession, the United States Treasury had run out of money. The government had no authority to raise taxes, no federal bank, no currency. But amid unprecedented troubles Lincoln saw opportunity—the chance to legislate in the centralizing spirit of the “more perfect union” that had first drawn him to politics.

Good book, great narration.
Revisado: 04-06-22
A good addition to tge overall story of our civil war. Somethings missing in my opinion, specifically more in depth writing on the mistakes of the southern economy, though much of this is addressed culturally at the end.
Takes the veil off the idea that the Unions victory was inevitable.
A little too much ink spent on Chase.
All in all, a good story, wonderfully narrated, and a good addition of information on the a different aspect of the Civil War.

Historia
Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered and examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

What it was, what it did, etc.

From the number-one best-selling author of Three Days in Moscow and anchor of Fox News Channel’s Special Report with Bret Baier, a gripping history of the secret meeting that set the stage for victory in World War II - the now-forgotten 1943 Tehran Conference, where Franklin D. entirely too much time spent on the minutiae of the second world war which is more than adequately covered buy more experienced and more nuanced historians, Anthony Beevor, Max Hastings, Winston Churchill.
I was hoping for a book that concentrated on the political maneuverings with in the Tehran Conference and Yalta that is not what this book is. Well narrated well written ill titled.

Historia
Command of the oceans was crucial to winning World War II. By the start of 1942 Nazi Germany had conquered mainland Europe, and Imperial Japan had overrun Southeast Asia and much of the Pacific. How could Britain and distant America prevail in what had become a "war of continents"? In this definitive account, Evan Mawdsley traces events at sea from the first U-boat operations in 1939 to the surrender of Japan. He argues that the Allied counterattack involved not just decisive sea battles, but a long struggle to control shipping arteries and move armies across the sea.

If history really belongs to the victor, what happens when there's more than one side declaring victory? That's the conundrum Norman Davies unravels in his groundbreaking book No Simple Victory. Far from being a revisionist history, No Simple Victory instead offers a clear-eyed reappraisal, untangling and setting right the disparate claims made by America, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union in order to get at the startling truth.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Historia
During Jesus' earthly ministry, one of the primary ways he would instruct his disciples was through parables. People would gather from far and wide in order to listen to what Jesus said about the kingdom of God, and the most common way he would explain the kingdom was in parables. But what does God want us to learn from these parables? In this series, Dr. R.C. Sproul examines several parables of Jesus, exploring the rich truths they reveal about who Jesus is and what he came to achieve through his life, death, and resurrection.
